Alright, so long story short, me and my long time girlfriend are working on building a coin business. We sell on two accounts on ebay, and she often ships from her location (we are somewhat long distance). I cannot remember having to refund anyone for a coin being lost in the mail when it came from that account (which were mostly shipped from Maryland). I live in Central NJ and it seems most stuff goes through this central 'hub' in Trenton when it goes in the mail here, but I've had a fair number (more than 5) of coins that were supposedly lost in the mail that were sold on the other account and shipped from NJ as opposed to MD. Has anyone ever had an experience like this, or with this specific hub causing problems? I might just have everything without delivery confirmation and a bubble mailer shipped from MD, since it seems far more reliable.

Here is something that may or may not help you. I had my first ever coin shipment supposedly get lost in the mail a few weeks ago. It was headed from TN to MD.

I have had the same problem with Hazelwood MO. My own Post office says it's the black hole. I'm not sure if he meant things getting torn up by sub par machines or picked up by sticky fingers. I wonder what they do when something is scanned in at their office and is never heard from again. They have to know it's there somewhere. Do they look for it? If it's not scanned out on a truck it must still be there right?
I think the best you can do is make it as discrete as possible. No ebay label or B&B Coins etc. The less info the less chance of it vanishing. Sorry for the rant, I just had my 1913s T2 Buffalo vanish at Hazelwood.

I've been lucky, only one shipment that DC came back as "delivery failed" and my package was lost. It was about $100 worth of coins in a well-packaged box. I called the PO at least 5 times and never got resolution. They said my package was last scanned in Atlanta. I just thought it was strange they knew delivery failed but had no clue where my package was. LOL

After that I've been taking an extra precaution on expensive shipments. I wrap an address label around the coins with my phone number and REWARD IF FOUND, then I put that into a ziplock bag. If anyone gets around to opening the package, I'm hoping they attempt to return the contents....especially when they see it's just a "few pennies" inside.

In the past year of selling on the dreaded internet auction site, I have had eleven coins lost in shipment for which I had to reimburse the buyer (and lose the coins of course). Conversely, I have had two packages with coins coming my way lost in transit. I think we are possibly looking at a USPS-generated problem. I do know the postal inspectors have started an investigation of my loses. It seems there are "casual" workers that sort/process mail locally who are not union members and are hired in 90-day periods for around $10/hr. There appears to be a pattern in my losses which targets the midnight to 4am time frame. Since all my mail outs are sent in the same type of packaging it would, in theory, be easy to "target" these type of packages. Let's hope this problem can be defined and ultimately corrected. That's my story Your Honor and I'm sticking to it!
