I was coming home from college to visit the family, and I needed some gas, there is a halfway point I always stop at (about a 2 and a half hour ride). I was getting a headache so I decided to buy some water, got the cheapest one they had, which was 99 cents. I got 98 cents returned, when the lady was getting the coins, I definitely heard a strange CLINK, sounded different... She gave me the coins, and I kind of gave them a little shake, and something was definitely off. When I looked I saw this!

Well actually I check my change a lot... usually the only thing I keep are copper pennies. and I have found a couple wheat pennies... but I stop by that gas station all the time, and have never gotten anything but a copper penny every here and there.
First silver find for me though

Well done. We all have probably had many of them over the years, and just never noticed. I gotta start looking, but most of the time these days, my quarters are always new State Quarters. Not much old stuff like that left in circulation that has slipped through the cracks so to speak.... I know the banks pull out old money from circulation and burn it, but what about old coins? Does the collectors thin them out of circulation, or does the banks have a big part in it as well?

I know gas stations see quit a bit of silver come through. I know two people that are attendants; One gives me the silver she finds, the other guy keeps it for himself.
Last year, the guy who works at a Chevron here in Washington, had a customer come in to buy $40.00 in gas. The old man paid for the fuel with 40 Morgans!

Does the rip off of the uninformed ever stop? Apparently not. I would have LOVED to have had that guy sell me his Morgans for $30 each. Nothing like $1200 worth of gas in the tank.

Great change. I too check what I get and usually only find copper pennies and the occasional LWC. No silver in quite some time.

Ed,
I woulda called it a rip-off too, except the customer KNEW what he was giving the attendant. After he paid the guy said to the attendant, "Those are old coins, you know." I think the real problem in that situation is that the attendant doesn't know anything about coins though, except to keep the silver he sees.
It does make me sad that people in this economy are hurting for money and have to resort to spending coins like that at face value. I do wish the guy had known to just take those coins 15 miles up the freeway to the coin shop and get many times $40, though.

I believe the gas station receives some silver ! Sometimes happen people can not just wait or go to sale the coins , special for gas just like the fastfood markets as well ! I wish I was the one who received the coins , I would give to the old man a whatever I had and would keep the coins becsuse if not someone else would get the coins .
