Bought my first box of nickels, found 20 pence. At least I found something for a gain here lol. I couldn't get anything in my 50 centers :(

Anyone know any good ones to keep? I know War Nickels, but are any other pre-1961 nickels (if they don't have an error)worth anything?

Yes there are lots of key dates. By the way I only keep pre60 nickels but whatever you want.
Key dates: 38D, 38S, 39S, 39D, 50D, 51S
Semi key dates: 42D nickel not silver, 46S, 48S, 50, 55, 47S

I keep EVERY date before 1960 except the culls, even the 1939 and 1959D

with the wisdom given above.

Welcome to the wonderful world of nickel roll searching ..... I am now at 245,600 raw coins searched and having a blast.

Something else to keep in mind ... Jefferson nickel aficionados are also looking for fully-struck coins that exhibit what is known as "Full Steps" (FS) on the reverse of the coin at the base of Monticello.

These are common from 1987 through 1999 ... and everyday finds from 2000 to date .... but very tough to find in earlier years and can add a significant premium to the value of an otherwise 'common' pre-1987 coin.

Sooo .. familiarize yourself with the details of a FS nickel ... and examining the pre-1987 coins to see if you can find any.

Looking forward to any reports you make on your finds and successes.

David

You should also keep every 2009 nickel that you come across. I think they are considered a semi-key, if not a key. This is due to a significant reduction in nickel production that year.

I actually am keeping all my nickels searched. They have more metal value than face. I just feel they are real money and have worth! They will never be worth less than face and with the way our dollar is going (paper) nickels are a good investment!

I was not aware of the lower 2009 production. I went through my first 2 nickel rolls yesterday afternoon (along with a couple penny rolls) and was very happy to discover a 1940, 1939 and 1950 in 2 rolls. The pennies got me nothing but I had a great time.

You found a 1950?!?!?!?! Holy moley Mikecouli! You lucky duck. That is one of the toughest dates to score in circulation. I have searched 170 rolls and have not found a single one! Great score.
