I need some help with this one.

It is one of the coins I got in an uncleaned lot.

Obverse looks female facing right but details are not good

Reverse looks like an eagle standing right and looking left and again details are not good.

It is Bronze about 14mm and weighs 1.78 grams

There is some lettering but I can not tell what it is and I do not want to over clean it.

These pictures are not great and I will try a different camera with various lighting tomorrow.

My first suspicion is that it is Roman colonial.

Not a lot of clear detail to go by. It does appear to be a Roman provinical possibility of Julia Domna wife of the emperor Septimius Severus 193-211 AD.

Here is a little better picture of the Reverse

It is a very distinctive eagle that I have not seen in any listing that I have checked

The eagle is standing right and looking left and has a ring or wreath in its beak

The Obverse does look a lot like Julia Domna but I have not found anything with this eagle on the reverse so far

Eureka

I have found a coin with the same eagle on the reverse.

It has Septimius Severus on the obverse but I think that it is a step in the right direction.

Check this coin out http://tjbuggey.ancients.info/images/sepsteagl.jpg

This is the info for the coin in the link:

Septimius Severus 193-211 CE Æ 16 ( 2.16 gm); Nicopolis ad Istrum
Obv: AV KAI CEVHPOC. Laureate head right.
Rev: NIKOPOLI PPOCICT eagle standing left with wreath in its beak.
Ref: AMNG 1410.

Is it possible that they made a coin with his wife on the obverse and the same eagle on the reverse?

My coin is lighter and I think smaller.

I am hoping that this is the clue that I need to identify this little bronze baby.

Anyone have a clue as to where this city is located?

Well I have had no more luck on finding anything on this coin.

Is it the only one in existence?

Is there anyone who knows about these colonial or provincial coins, please speak up.

I will do the research just clue me in on how, or where to look.

I thought that after finding the Septimius Severus coin with the eagle reverse that is the same as this coin that it would be easy, so much for that thought.

HELP

It might also be from Marcianopolis - a neighbouring coin issuing city of the time. Of all the cities in Moesia Inferior these two had the largest outputs. Thje fabric looks right for either of these cities so it might be worth having a look there. I also know that the eagle reverse is found on small (1 assarion) coins there from different emperors.

The best reference is the book by Hristova & Jekov and I'll have a look when I get home tonight

FINALY FOUND IT!!

Thank you for your help with the information on the book Bacchus2.
I have not ordered it yet due to the price at this time but I will get it for my birthday in a couple weeks.

I found this through FORVM links on Identifying Provincial Roman Coins.

This is the info from the web page:

8.17.1.4 EAGLE FLEDGLING
27 12 04 (acc date) AE16 1.89g axis ~12:00. Nicopolis ad Istrum. Julia Domna, draped bust to r. [IOVLIA]D | OMNA SEB (?). Rev., Eagle with wings folded, regardant with wreath in beak, stg to r. on a line. NIKOP[OL.. | PRO]S ISTRO. Cf. Pick p. 395, no. 1481, but even if Pick's specimens do not stand on rocks this one is different dies and a different obv. legend. See also these eagles for Caracalla, Geta, Septimius.

There are pictures of 3 different coins which are the same as mine but in better condition.

I am hoping to get a better example of this coin and the others (Caracalla, Geta, Septimius) with this eagle reverse.

Now on to the next challenge
