I already posted about the toned War Nickel I purchased last weekend. (https://goccf.com/t/90116)

The same dealer had a box of hobo nickels. He said he had purchased 2 different collections and these represented what he had left. He had them priced from $16 on up (I think $30 or $40 was the most expensive I saw). May were like this. One had an artist's name stamped on the reverse. There were a few very cheap looking attempts that looked like they were done with an electric engraver and were basically adding long or bushy hair to the bust on the obverse.

I looked around for a while to find the best example he had priced at $16:

Neat! I would really like to add a couple of these to my collection, but I don't want to buy a modern version. I want the originals that were done back in the day. But I know next to nothing about the older varieties and don't want to put money into it unless I know it's authentic.

I'd say that one is modern. Originals had designs which used a simple punch, where this looks like an engraving tool. Also, no patina.

I picked one up from a dealer a while back that is simular to yours for $20. When I got home I looked at it closer and found that it was a 1913 d type 2. What a waste of a key date coin.

I never knew what these were until now, I heard the name thrown around though. Pretty cool looking coin.
One thing that is confusing to me is that people say counter stamp coins are "worthless" and "damaged" coins
yet something like this fetches a big premium, I think 16 dollars for a damaged coin is a lot. Some inconsistencies make it funny when people try to explain value of coins. It really isn't about the coins at all, it's about what people will spend money on, and how much they will pay for it.
Interesting. Not taking away from the coin either so sorry if it sounds that way. I'm just pointing something out.

In the case of a hobo nickel you aren't buying a damaged coin, you are buying a piece of artwork that happens to have a coin for its "canvas". Some of this art is very good and worth a lot, some is junk and worth very little.
