Someone sent me photos of what appears to be a Templeton Reid gold coin, dated 1849, with a face value of $25. Links to photos are posted below.

I did a little research and learned there was only one known specimen of an 1849 Templeton Reid $25, which was stolen from the US Mint in 1858. It was never recovered.

This seems too fantastic to believe that this is an authentic specimen, but who knows?

Do any of the grading services authenticate private gold coins? Is there a place the coin's owner can send it to learn more about it?

The problem is, is it even real gold to begin with. My suspicion is that it's probably a fake token minted in brasss to imitate what it could have looked like. The surfaces itself show pitiful pittings which gold rarely do have, unless it has a high amount of copper alloy in it, but I don't think so.

I agree that it is probably fake but I would probably take it to a dealer that I trusted to get him to weigh the coin or find out what it is supposed to weigh and weight it myself f I had something to do it with. One thing is also, if it was stolen from the US mint it is still to this day stolen property and will probably be illegal to own by anyone but the US mint. I am sure there are many copies of this coin since it has the mystic to it and it seems every other California gold coin was copied so this one surely would be copied as well because of the fact that there was only one and it was stolen and never recovered, but it would be cool to find out one way or another but if it does happen to come back authentic then your friend has a dilemma on his hands on what to do with it (the right thing or the wrong thing)

Thanks for the reasoned responses we've received thus far.

The writings on the 1849 Templeton Reid $25 indicate there was only one known specimen. Now I know its far fetched, but I suppose its possible, too, that there were additional specimens produced in 1849 that were never publicized. Proving that this is a bona fide specimen would be difficult, but is there a service who can do this, or at least confirm the metallic content?

I'm not sure which would be the best way to go about what you are asking, but I am sure you will get some replies with suggestions once everyone wakes up and has time to visit the forum
