Let me try to explain. I'm still in college and recently got into a pretty nasty car wreck. Luckily my parents were in town, and they have helped me a lot, support and monetarily. Usually for fathers day I try to go in with, my sisters and spend 20 bucks or so to get him something he may use in the future. But my dad does like antiques, history and old coins. I wanted to get him something a little more this year, I was hoping for something gold or silver (which is why I'm posting here). Maybe a 1/10th oz piece, but I don't wanna get an AGE I was hoping for something a little older, or maybe a roll of Mercury dimes. Any ideas? Sorry if that was wordy. Thanks guys!

Knowing how much you can spend is most key here, so found you the cheapest example with nice uncirculated to start with.... I thought about this for a bit. Tough question, try and find an older nice gold coin around 1 10th an oz., at a good price. Hard to beat a 5 gold peso, and I bet this one below will finish right around 200 bucks. If you went like early 1900's or or late 1800's, you will pay much more in most cases for a coin the size you seek.... http://cgi.ebay.com/1955-MEXICO-5-P...em53e7c7b4ca

I wanna stay below 300 I think. And you prefer to stay American.
After some searching I was looking at $2.50 quarter eagles, but they seem to have a hefty premium on them

I was gonna also suggest say like a 1910 2.5 gold Indian, a great design and I know where one is at a local pawn shop in nice gradable shape, and he only wants 200 for it. On ebay I have seen them over 400 in some cases, but of course that was a real nice year and coin, probably graded in most cases.... I was gonna look for one for just an example, but if this one below ends here in two hours under 300, may be a nice addition, like what I mentioned above but this one here is 1913.... http://cgi.ebay.com/1913-2-5-INDIAN...em2311329ace

Yea, I really like those. My cities monthly coin show is this upcoming Wednesday. I get hesitant about buying gold on ebay, but I can if necessary, lol

I second the quarter eagle coin as a great gift. Some serious shopping will be needed, though. A friend of mine has one of these mounted in a metal ring that attaches to a gold chain. Not sure what the ring is made of but it looks like brass. He wears it as a necklace and it is quite unusual.

Does anyone know why there is such a premium on the $2.50?
You can get a 5$ piece for almost the same price...

I was wondering the same thing about the 2.5. Must be something to do with the minting total, and total remaining examples in decent shape or better, rare factor if you will....

Pretty low mintages on the Quarter Eagles. I also read that back in the days of circulating gold coins a nice Quarter Eagle was often given as a gift around the holidays. Supposedly there are a lot of mint State Quarter Eagles now surviving. I was buying the Indian denominations on ebay for awhile and there were more quality Quarters than there were Halves. In higher grades the Half Eagles quickly balance out price wise with the Quarters.
