*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***I promised pics of this cent a while ago, then couldn't find the camera, then forgot about it. At anyrate, I have the camera and the pics! Going into this, I find the lack of any pitting very interesting. This cent was dicovered in a box I was searching a week or so ago and it jumped right out at me. My first impression was an acid wash, however on closer inspection, I found there was no pitting.

I think all zinc cents may look nicer than the copper coated zincolns. They should have gone with the aluminum.

Can you post some non-angles pics?

That's interesting! Do the zinc portions have luster/cartwheel? I'm intrigued by the patina on the copper, but the zinc looks bright. Here's a partial plating LMC I have:

As requested, non-angle photos. Let me know what you think folks. These photos are much cleaner. This is the reverse. Notice it has crud on it. I was tempted to try to clean it, but decided it wouldn't be worth chancing a reaction with the exposed zinc. I know zinc is quick to rot. I like this coin. First of its kind for me. So what is this little animal described as?

Interesting how the zinc surfaces appear struck that way!

Yeah I agree with Dvcollector. I don't quite know what to say other than I wish I found it!
Hopefully others may have more insight.

My gut says chemical exposure, but I think I see some luster on the obverse zinc exposed area. Acid would dull the finish there. Is the exposed zinc are lusterous? I've never seen anything like it so I'm inclined to guess damage.

So it seems to be inconclusive as if this is a true plating error or a chemical bath.
I've been looking around at cents that have had the chemical bath and I do see the dulling that Bad Thad mentioned, and the pitting someone else mentioned in them all. This coin does have some luster on the copper surfaces and of course the zinc surfaces are very clean and free of pitting.
So I don't know either. My initial gut feeling was that this was a chemical bath coin myself. However, after closely looking at my ultra high resolution versions of the above photos, I'm just about convinced this coin may be the real deal.
I don't suppose anyone attributes this stuff? Even so, the costs is not something I'm willing to dive into at this time.

I hope an expert chimes in on this one! Perhaps this could be moved to the modern varieties forum?

I moved it to the 'Modern US Variety & Error Coins' forum as suggested. Our resident experts tend to spend more time in this area.

I tend to not give the tamperable coins any desigination. If I find them on OBW rolls, then I know it is real. The non plated zinc, burnished, black beauties, satin finish, brass plated ones can be faked, as well as un-natural toning so I never say either way. I just give my opinion on what it could be. If I said it was something and it was later stated it wasn't, then someone quotes me on ebay saying I confirmed it. SO I'm drawing my lines on the types of altered coin that is flooding ebay.

I can certainly appreciate where you are coming from with that Coop. I can assure everyone this coin will not be found on ebay. I like this coin and I would like to see it preserved. Any suggestions on how it can be best preserved for the long term?

Any way to keep contact from air/finger prints/moisture/sneezes away from the surface. I have another suggestion that I won't post here.
