Two broken posts that would have formed the centers of the 8. There would have been normally two needle like posts to make the centers, but when they break off, they leave the area un-formed.

I bet that the top pin broke off first and several strikes later the bigger pin or bottom one broke off......

I don't think both would break off at the same time........

I find the coin cool and would keep it myself......
