Im hoping someone can give me some input on this. This is one of my many extra Statehood Quarters that I have and I was going through them tonight seeing if I could spot any errors or something like that and ran across this one.

Hopefully the image is good enough to judge, if not I will have to see if I can do any better. At any rate, look at the E in We. All of the edge lettering seems flat, undefined. I compared it to another identical quarter and there is a distinct difference but I thought I would start with this and go from there.

Okay, sorry, I had hoped to embed the image, but the image link was not working, so I had to use a hyperlink to it.

That is die wear. Die wear affect the devices closest to the the rim first. What is die wear. It is wear on the die that starts showing on the field first as little lines that start closest to the rim. Usually on cents this is noticed first on the L of LIBERTY.

Note the devices edge facing the rims:

As the die ages the flow lines gets stronger removing the the area of the field/devices so the die is breaking down. The die's coins start to suffer more with each thousand that are struck. Eventually the wear leaves lines over the tops of devices with what I call snow drifting.

At this point the die is starting to retire. One event can shorten a dies life. Such as die breaks/eventually cuds/over polishing to cover clashes may also cut a dies life short. depending on the event and how sever the dame was.
Die wear can also be noted in VLDS examples that have been over polished. Also an event that removes part of a die's life:

Hopes this helps?

WD, thank you for embeding the image.

coop, thank you sir for the great information and education. If you look at the lettering around the rim its weak, the United States Of America and Quarter Dollar are all week, they dont seem to have a lot of height and are not well defined, flat even. The reverse is much the same.

It is a 2000-P New Hampshire quarter and at first I just thought it was a design thing. But I'm not expert in this but I have looked at my share under magnification and just couldnt shake something was not right there so I grabbed another 200-P NH quarter and sure enough, comparing it like that you can clearly see the diffences.

I guess my next question is would they classify this as a mint error or no and is it something I should hang on to or are there so many out there that I'm one in a billion or so?

Several of the coins struck before your coin will have the same degrees of weakness. The thousands after your coin will continue to receive more wear until the die is retired. Valuable/premium? I would prefer one with less wear or even an EDS (Early Die State) example. I would spend it. It's worth what it says on the back.

Okay, I wasnt sure and I was traveling in the same thought area you were coop.

Ive always kind of wondered if the guys on the presses at the mint get special privileges and are able to grab a coin for their personal coin collection. If so I would most certainly be grabbing the first one that was punched from a new die. I highly doubt they can but it sure would be a nice perk.

No, Mint workers are not even allowed to carry pocket change into the facility. Grabbing a coin for a personal collection would get you a matching set of stainless steel bracelets and a federal prison sentence.

It's still there. Personally I use Google Chrome because it already had a spell checker built in. I believe Firefox still implements it as well.
