Did anyone catch the Mythbusters episode last night? They were testing Old West gunslinger myths, including one where they tried to shoot a hole through a silver dollar. They used REAL MORGANS!!! ACK! I love that show, but I'm seriously considering firing off a protest e-mail!

Rachael, are you sure they weren't Chinese counterfeit Morgans? I don't think even Mythbuster's producer would blow holes in something worth $12+/- at melt (or would they?).

So, how good were they at shooting holes in "alleged" silver dollars? It's not that great a feat in marksmanship at close range or even shooting at a coin thrown in the air, but actually punching a hole in a silver dollar would be more a function of the calibre and cartridge load.

I tried that once with my deer gun, a Ruger Super Redhawk (rifle hunting got boring so I switched to handgun for more sport), and a few Kennedy halves. We screwed a bench vise to a log, and then covered the front with another log up to coin level to catch riccochets. The results were hilarious - any good hit pretty much obliterated the coin.

I guess a .44" bullet on a 1.25" coin is a bit of an overmatch.

I have been thinking about a Kennedy half or Morgan dollar at 100 yards with my tactical .308 or my custom built .54 cal. muzzleloader. Both would more than serve the purpose for a great COLLECTABLE from such a notoriuos buffalo hunter? Can't believe the cowboys of the old west didn't see this money making opportunity way back then? Shoot, they could have quit the life of crime and became famous "sports" figures of the time!
Settle down Kyra as every Morgan that bites the dust helps preserve the value of those still remaining!!!

I remember my grandfather shooting pennies when I was little with a .22 rifle without a scope or anything (actually I am not 100% sure if I actually remember him doing it or my mind thinks I remember him doing it because I heard about it so much, because I was pretty young when he was doing it) but I havent seen that episode of mythbusters.

It's only a couple of worn out common date morgan's - plus, they did look really cool. I mean, they were both, like, 1889-p in f-12 or VF-20.There is another 21,700,000 or so more to replace it, so I wouldn't be to concerned.

In order to test the myth, I would think that they needed to reproduce the exact conditions. How did the Myth Busters do?

You think silver dollars are a good shot, check out this guy:

He can throw an aspirin in the air and hit it with a .22. I'd sure hate to make him mad.

The Mythbusters subject came up on the WINS group. According to someone who also watched the program, the .45 (also, I think a .44-40) bullet wouldn't punch a hole in the dollar. I would guess that a fully jacketed bullet or a spitzer bullet (but not in a revolver) might be more effective.

Hitting small objects in the air isn't as difficult as it looks. We did this in the Army with BB guns and metal slugs. It's instinctive shooting just like with a shotgun (i.e., the weapon is an extension of the shooter's eyes) only with a rifle. We had novices repeatedly hitting the slug after a little practice. A handgun is a little different, but it's the same principle.

The Morgans were warped out of shape but not holed. They were only able to punch a hole through a silver dollar sized lead slug. Sorry, didn't mean to leave anyone hanging! Speaking of hanging, they also tried to shoot the rope holding a dummy on a gallows. It took a sharpshooter five shots if I remember right to cut the rope!
