Hi All you folks down under,

I just obtained some Australian Florins. Can anyone tell me if there is a quality album in which to retain them in. Like a date and mint type album. I would like to expand my collection of these beautiful silver coins. Thank you for your time and comments.

Florins have interested me since I was a kid.

Over many years, I have managed to acquire a type set of florins from all over the World from all Countries. I have 44 different silver types in .925, .900 and .500 silver, ranging from VF to uncirculated. I only need two more silver types to make the set complete.

I also have 82 copper nickel coins based on the florin, most of which are of 20 cents denomination, or 10 pence. Almost all of these are in uncirculated condition. Australia continues to issue new types in copper nickel both as NCLT, and for circulation.

Needless to say, an album for this type of collection does not exist!

Lee, the first "Australian" florins were issued in 1910.
At that time, minimum wage, for a man supporting a non-working wife and three children, was 42 shillings per week.
Australian soldiers in WW1 were paid six shillings per day.
Just to help you keep these beautiful coins in perspective.
Also, the 1959 is a one-year type, and there's a great story behind it, or maybe that's "underneath" it.
And, welcome to CCF.

Peter: I am lucky enough to have a no egg proof.

Apparently, the proofs were made after the circulation striking was completed. The master hub had a flaw in it, which showed up as if the emu had laid an an egg. The master hub had the flaw machined from it, and this can be observed if you look closely in the area where the egg detail was removed.

To make sure that you don't have a standard strike which has been fiddled with, you have to look at a number of proofs, to be familiar with them. 1506 proofs were made. Mine is absolutely FDC.

All proofs show evidence of this machining. Some sort of proof! I thought that proofs were supposed to be the best quality coins that the Mint could make!
