Hi all;

Recently have come across a 1998 20 cent coin (normal platypus design).

The coin is same weight etc of normal 20 cent, however the rims are raised and smooth. (I think I'm using the right terms here, around the side of the coin is smooth, instead of bumpy like normal coins).

Is this a common error? Is the coin worth much? It has been circulated.

Any ideas or opinions appreciated.

Sounds like the reeding may have been filed/sanded off, PMD (Post Mint Damage, probably someone with too much spare time on their hands.

Thanks for your reply Nancy! If nothing else I have now learnt a new term: reeding!

The coin is incredibly smooth however and I'm not sure how the rim would have been raised.

Don't suppose anyone would know a good place in Sydney to take it to to ask?
(Any coin dealer, or would there be one in particular?)

There's another possibility, and that is that the coin has been stood on it's edge and the top edge has been tapped with a hammer, then turned ever so slightly and the process repeated, many many many times.

This results in all the reeding being smoothed out and the coin will have acquired raised edges.

Still PMD though.

Have examined coin again, with the thought in mind it's not genuine mint error, and it is clear that this is the case. I guess when you're thinking $$, it's easy to forgive the coins lack of authenticity.

Thanks Nancy

I have fooled around with a 10 cent coin, where the reeding was very faint. I polished of the remaining reeding until it looked like a plain edged coin, then I put it back into circulation.

One of my best and easiest tricks is to put a coin onto the red hot element of an electric stove to get the coin red hot, then drop it into cold water. Looks weirdly black with an uncirculated coin. Someone will scratch their head when they see this type of PMD in circulation, especially with an MS64 freshly released coin!

Easy to do on a wet cold rainy and boring afternoon!

And then, I will appear on the forum, with heaps of topics asking is it an error or PMD))
Now I see how these coins flow into circulation
