*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Any chance any of these coins are authentic? https://picasaweb.google.com/brett....DYk83X8qTGVgNo sign in to look at them, uploaded them in the original size so you can blow them up for detail. The color is different, tried my flash with some, the others are just the fluorescent lighting in the little haji shop. Any info would be appreciated. They also had lots of other copper coins, from the mideast and asia. Edited by bmack500 06/13/2011 09:38 am

Best bet would be measuring each one , weighing it and most importantly running a magnet over it.

Roughly what should they weigh / measure for the type of coins they represent? Is there a table somwhere?

http://www.coincommunity.com/us_dollars/morgan.aspQuote: Weight: 26.73 grams Diameter: 38.1 millimeters Of course the weight will vary some, especially if the coin wears down to a nub. Oh just looked at the pics and only saw one Morgan but use the "US coin facts" link on the left side of the page.

Zero chance- they are fantasies and outright fakes and no doubt have zero silver content Quote: the others are just the fluorescent lighting in the little haji shop.
The first thing that should have told you they are not genuine is that you found them in a haji shop

Good point. I haven't purchased them, but you never know when somebody doesn't know what they have.

Biggest tipoffs would be the use of Goloid and Trade dollar pattern designs along with reeded rimmed edges on the Draped Bust Dollars(should be lettered edge struck in an open collar screw press). The 1858 Indian Head is conglomeration of an Indian Head cent obverse design and a Liberty head Gold dollar reverse along with the laughable and well-known 1906 Statue of Liberty knockoff of an actual 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial commemorative dollar.

biokemist >> Morgan dollars have been faked for decades. A very close friend of mine had one that fooled me. I thought there was no chance of it being fake because he owned it for some 30+ years. It was a groomsman gift from a wedding. The funny thing, I looked at two others from that wedding and they were genuine....I told him he got the "dud". LOL

I supposed that compared to the gems they sell here, the fake coins are probably even easier to spot! (Provided you know what you're doing, which I do not).

Almost 100% certain they're fake. In most countries, they're used to dealing with dozens of kinds of coins, and they're not likely to be fooled. It's just Americans who can half-speak one language and are confused by a half dollar or mini-buck who get suckered by them.
