I can't tell if it's incomplete plating, pre-strike damage (that removed the plating), or a stuck-in piece of zinc or similar-colored metal. If there's a narrow fissure flanking the silvery piece of metal, then it's the last.

I think he meant that if there is a narrow (and perhaps shallow) groove on either side of the exposed zinc, then it is a stuck-in piece of zinc, or similar colored metal.

That's just my interpretation of Mr. Diamond's analysis.

That's a very cool looking coin. I haven't seen one like it before.

Maybe a piece of plating was on the planchet before it was plated? After plating the piece of foil that was obscuring the plating in that area fell off. I found in a 1986 mint set one had a piece of foil plaing on the coin. But I wouldn't see no plating below the foil. But I left it in the sealed cent set.

Bring it along out to the summer seminar. There will be several experts there who can view it in hand and tell you what it is.
