Hey Guys,

I found a very weird 1985-D penny while I was working. It's an off center penny to start with, HOWEVER, the front with the Lincoln bust also has the reverse side indented over it almost completely. It's only missing a small part of the bottom left corner of the monument, and half the N and the whole T in ONE CENT. ALSO, the back side is a normal penny, except it also has an indent of the monument stamped diagonally across it very lightly. Anyone have any ideas about what its value may be? I've looked on the internet and can't seem to find a coin similar to it.

I think I've read here you can make this kind of coin with a few pennies stacked and a hammer. So probably PMD.
But just to be more sure and after staring at the pics for a bit, are there two raised memorials on the back or one raised like normal and the other stamped into the coin?

That's interesting, if each coin is made of the same composites and percents however, if you were to hit each other, they would not make any significant marks into each other. Just Earth sciences, if two items with the same hardness meet they don't mark each other unless one is heated to the point near melting and the other is cooled.

Well I just tried to duplicate (sort of) the mushing of two pennies (shield on lincoln) and it took a serious whack to get the small imprint I managed. So whatever the cause it's still an impressive looking damage. Maybe a vice?

You might want to experiment at home a little and rethink that thought

I don't know how well the hammer thing will work, but I believe a good vice would do the job.
