This nickel was included in a box of assorted coins I received last weekend. I can barely read the date but I'm pretty sure it is an 1882. The motto In God We Trust looks odd to me: the letters appear very thick. Is this just due to the heavy wear or could it be from doubling or re-punching? Other obverse details don't appear doubled. Is a re-punched motto variety known for 1882?

Any opinions? Thanks!

The motto on the Shield nickels is known for heavy Longacre doubling and often suffers from die chips filling in the spaces in the letters. What you are seeing here is not unusual for Shield nickels.

The OP's coin is an 1882. Correctly identified as Longacre doubling of the motto. Very common.

The missing UST on the second coin are the result of a Grease Filled Die.
