Hi everyone, After reading a lot of postings here, I was hesitant jumping into the fire on ebay. My main interest is in IHP, Mercs and WLH... but where to start? I decided I love Mercs the most... I have lots of holes in my collection, but I decided to "buy the coin, not the date" and set my sights on a pretty nice looking 1937 with FSB... heading into the last few seconds it was at $5.50, so I bid just over $10... and... nope, this one got away from me. There's no rush, so I'm back to casting my line again! -Les

Welcome to the forum! Sorry you didn't get the coin you wanted. I know how bad that can stink. I bought 'raw' coins off of ebay years ago and got burnt a few times, so I stick with PCGS and NGC graded coins now. That way, when a coin is listed as FSB, it will be generally accepted as FSB if PCGS or NGC say it is.

From the pics, this one is a FSB, yes?

There is some glare right over top of the area I would be questioning.
I want to say yes, but would need a better picture.

To me it look likes the lines almost meet but am not 100% with the glare as already mentioned.

I usually try to wait until the last few minutes to bid myself. That way I know I will not talk myself into getting into a bidding war and pay more for a coin that I think its worth. I have bid as soon as I saw something when I first started ebay and then days later get out bid (I always bid my max I want to pay) and then I sit there and talk to my self and say "what if they get it for $1.00 more than I bid, I can see where $1.00 more is still a good deal" so I would re-bid and with my dollar and his extra dollar that was higher then mine it was now going to be $3.00 more than I wanted to pay in the first place. But what if that was his max, for $3.00 more I could have the coin, and I really want the coin. So I am sure you can see how all these coins people have questions about on how the seller got so much for the coin could happen. It is human nature to be competitive and these types of bidding wars are just one example of this

Nor does it matter what any of us think, since only a TPGs opinion counts.

Welcome - I have had many nice coins get away from me on ebay but it's important to follow 'bidding rules' for yourself that fit your personality. Someone who is highly competitive or perhaps impulsive needs to be very strict with themselves. Lots of ebay auctions end with bids that are way too high. I also wait until the last minutes of an auction but will only bid a max once and then accept the outcome. Sometimes I second guess my bid and say that I should have bid $1 more and could have won. However, when you see the results of an auction you are not seeing the winner's maximum bid only his/her next bid.

It does matter what you all think, or I wouldn't have asked. I am here to learn, and I value any and all opinions. I'm one of those "stick in the mud" types who doesn't like TPG... I'm not into coins for investment rollover, and I like to be able to hold my coins, so consider me weird, but I have no interest in having my coins stabbed. On this coin I uploaded in this post, the ebay seller didn't present it as FSB, it was my best guess. -Les

I think a lot of buyers now purchase slabbed examples as assurance, valid or not, that a coin is genuine.

That's a pretty coin. How much did it go for?

It sold for $10.60 plus $1.75 shipping. When I bid in the last four seconds of the auction and I bid $10 it was still at $5 so I thought my bid was very safe. It is a good looking coin. I shoulda bid more. Ain't hindsight wonderful?

This is a really nice 1937 merc. But IMO it would not grade FSB (close but no cigar). I might have gone $1 or $2 more that's it. I have bought a lot of mercs (raw only) from ebay and there will be others. I would second guess myself sometimes when I did not get a coin from ebay, but there were a few times I second guessed when I DID win it also. I don't like slabbed coins either but I have a couple. I would never break one out of a slab though. That's just me.
