I'm looking at starting to buy silver Quarters and Morghan dollars as a 30 year investment. Due to the amount of fakes out there I was wondering which method besides looking at the coin and going to reputable dealers. I was considering bringing a coin scale or using a rare earth magnet.

And would a coin dealer be offended if I weighed the coin right in front of him

Thank you for your thoughts

to this here community.

Getting professionally graded coins will greatly reduce the number of fakes you might encounter. NGC, ANACS, or PCGS are all reputable graders.
Most self respecting dealers would not sell a fake coin as far as I know, but pawn shops, etc., might not know the difference necessarily. I think a dealer might get annoyed if you brought a scale in, but remember, You are the customer and YOU are the one buying the dealer's bread for him!

Just as a side note, it's Morgan not Morghan dollars. Good luck in your investing!

there are fake TPG slabs with fake coins inside them and even though they have been kept pretty much at bay online by collectors and professionals that know what to look for I am almost positive they may be a growing problem when buying on the street from strangers. Even at shows not every dealer is reputable because all someone has to do is pay the booth fee and start selling, they do not care if they are a dealer or collector trying to sell their duplicates. Anyway, I just wanted to put this out there, if you are wanting to purchase these for an investment I am sure you were talking about raw coins anyway. I am going to say if a dealer or seller has a problem with you weighing their coins if you are uncomfortable with purchasing raw coins then I would say that is not a dealer you need to deal with.

are we talking about raw circulated quarters or certified. I'm assuming raw quarters. If raw, dealers sell by the piece not by the weight. For example a $1000 face bag will have 4000 quarters.

Dollars same thing or certified. I can and I'm sure a dealer will understand you buying a raw high value Morgan and then weighing. But if it's a high $$$ Morgan , chances are that the Morgan will be certified, and that's when you'll get a look if you weigh it.

As someone who sells roughly $20,000 a month in junk silver (90% coins) here's my opinion... Don't bring a scale, most dealers aren't going to let you weigh each coin, especially if your buying several at a time. Don't expect to be able to cherry pick (spend an hour picking each coin you want). Yes, you are a paying customer, but you are by far not the only one. Junk silver flys off the shelves and there are usually many people a day like yourself trying to buy it. The best thing you can do is find a good dealer you trust. Whether he owns a pawn shop (like me) or runs his own coin store. Go in talk about what you're looking to do. If the guy behind the counter seems passionate about his trade then he's reputable. If he treats you like your wasting his time, move on. As far as fakes go, I have yet to see a counterfeit dime, quarter, or half dollar faked just for silver content. Morgans and Peace dollars be a little more wary of. Get a loupe and learn the signs of a fake. 1921 morgans will most always be safe lol. Remember if your looking for silver as an investment, there are many different ways of collecting it. Bars, Rounds, 90%, Silver Eagles, foreign silver...
