And I have no idea where to start. I have started reading here and have already learned a lot. I want to spend a few weeks classifying these and eventually sell them as I have other coins to move onto. My oldest morgan is 1879 and is in pretty good condition but my 1900 and older morgans are for the most part in pretty circulated condition of course with a few exceptions. The exceptions go both ways as I have about 5 coins with no dates/ partial dates. I have 10 1921 morgans and there are a few that could be classified at a pretty high class (remember I am new here lol). Same goes with the Peace dollars I have about 20 of those and there are a few in pretty darn good condition. So where do I start here? I have 3 1899 and one is in great condition but all are O mint. By the way I have yet to wipe these down with a moist rag or anything yet as I will need advice on a simple cleaning prior to selling them. Here are some dates and a few pictures Morgans 1879 1881 (one o one plain) 1882 (one o one s one plain) 1883 (one o) 1885 (one o) 1886 (one o) 1888 (two o) 1889 (two o) 1891 (one o) 1897 (one o) 1898 ( no mint or unreadable) 1899 (three o) 1900 (two o) 1921-(5 D and 5 no mint). plus three that are worn down pretty good one is a 187 something Peace dollars 1922 (8 no mint 5 D) 1923 (4 no mint 2 S) 1925 ( no mint) Where do I start guys?! Start by NOT cleaning any of them, not one wipe! The urge is overwhelming sometimes, but I can't stress enough that the damage done will be irreversible. Your collection looks perfectly fine as they are. Wiping with a damp rag will leave hairline marks on the surface. Now some specifics. This section (Morgan and Peace dollar VAMs) is to discuss and identify the catalogued die pairs for the two series. Each die imparts its uniqueness on the coins it strikes. These were damaged, modified, and re-engraved throughout their lives. Significant changes earn a separate catalogue number. Remember every Morgan and Peace dollar is a VAM. VAM does not refer to an individual diagnostic of the die pair (i.e., broken star point), but refers to the obv and rev pairing. The complete list by date and mintmark can be found at VAMWorld.com. Also note that 95% of VAMs don't carry a premium. But some of those 5% sell for moon money. To identify which die pairings ( VAM) your coins are, we would need much larger photos of the obv and rev of each coin. It a pain sometimes, but who knows ... you may have a treasure in that group.

Yeah they are my dads, I am willing to put in the research (hey this is fun right) and he says he is fine with me eventually selling them if I want. We have some other coins in the collection (5 kennedy 1964 half dollars plus others, a huge bag of wheat pennies, a tin of susan b anthony (i know not worth anything but maybe I have a near date) Eisenhower dollars a big bag of wheat pennies, paper money and other stuff I have yet to identify, mercury coins). I will resist the urge to wipe any of them down. Okay so I posted in the wrong place, I am just starting to wrap my head around this VAM thing. I am going to work on better pictures too, no obvious winners in this bunch yet though right? How do you guys get around the 100kb picture post limit? Are there some good 1921 VAM morgans because I have some that are in great condition? Like I said I am going to put in the time researching all of these coins unfortunately I am pretty busy for a few days so the VAM guide may have to wait. Well cheers and happy hunting, hopefully I can get some more input here

Quote: How do you guys get around the 100kb picture post limit? The forum has an automagic resizing feature ... you'll see it just below the "Upload Iamge" icon when you are starting a thread or replying to a post. Give that a try! Nice looking coins .... do not touch them with anything other than you hands. David

First lets To the forum! Glad to see you here and your questions...Definitely NO CLEANING!!Cleaning or enhancing will only lower its value, If its a melt only coin "it is what it is"...if its a decent coin which you appear to have a few, you could loose half of its value and be back to MELT values...That hurts... You seem to have quite a few with nice luster which is good, AU maybe MS coins...Post some picks when you can all will be glad to help you,,IT IS ALOT OF FUN TOO!! but just starting to learn vams on your own can be a real head ache....there are many here will lots of good knowledge and advice...
