check out this link... http://cgi.ebay.com/Quarter-Eagle-G...em35b2f5c77bThink there is a reason why the seller is covering the info on the slab? I messaged him to ask for a picture without his thumb covering the info and he wouldn't respond. I've never heard of a PCGS slab without a grade, have you?

PCGS does not assign grades to problem coins. All they will certify is that the coin is genuine. Beware fake slabs! I wouldn't be surprized if the Chinese are faking genuine slabs these days. LOL

The following worries me: Q: What is the date on this coin? What is the grade on the slab. Really can't read anything in your pictures? A: Hello =) It's a 1903 and the picture does it absolutely no justice. As for the grade they just graded it as authentic it doesn't have a pcgs number on it. Thank you =)
But according to the PCGS web site: Q: What information is on the Genuine holder? And what do the various no-grade codes mean? A: All coins PCGS holders as Genuine have the words "PCGS Genuine" printed on the obverse.
In addition, on "Holed & Plugged" coins and "Rim Filed" coins the no grade reason will be printed on the front of the insert because these two impairments can be very difficult to recognize.
Coins determined to be "Peeling Lamination," "Not Genuine," and "PVC Residue" will NOT be holdered.
The format of the numbers printed on the obverse will remain the same. From the left - the coin number followed by a period, the "no grade code" assigned (such as 92 for cleaned), a slash and a certification number. A list of no grade codes is provided below:
No Grade Description Printed Description Holdered 82 Filed Rims Yes Yes 83 Peeling Lamination No No 84 Holed and Plugged Yes Yes 90 Not Genuine No No 91 Questionable Color No Yes 92 Cleaning No Yes 93 Planchet Flaw No Yes 94 Altered Surfaces No Yes 95 Scratch / Rim Dent No Yes 97 Environmental Damage No Yes 98 Damage No Yes 99 PVC Residue No No
The reverse of the insert will be modified on Genuine coins to read "GENUINE NOT GRADABLE."
We will not net-grade coins and will not print any other grading information. The no grade code to the right of the coin number is what should be used to determine the problem that PCGS has identified. Other than what has been mentioned the labels will remain the same, i.e., same color, design, etc.

The photo shows "Genuine" next to his thumb and the Cert number is also visible. According the the PCGS site it is graded as "Genuine (94 - Altered Surface)"
I still agree that it is VERY shady.

Heh, I was going to report the auction because you have to show both sides of the entire slab for certified coin listings. Then I discovered that this coin is not even listed as being certified under Item Specifics

It's real...but not a very good way to sell it though.
There are pictures of both sides of the slab certified as "genuine" which means it has issues (as mentioned above) but it is real
From the auction:
"It is slabbed by PCGS as genuine although it was not graded as you can see in the photos." "It's a 1903 and the picture does it absolutely no justice. As for the grade they just graded it as authentic it doesn't have a pcgs number on it."
Stupid pictures....

I think someone may be losing their 100% pos feedback soon.

Shady? I don't think so, just poorly done. It's a PCGS Genuine slab, the guys thumb covers the coin number that tells you it is a 1903 quarter eagle, but shows the 94 that tells you the coin has altered surfaces, and even shows the serial number (Anyone tried looking it up on the PCGS website? It should tell you the same thing.) He has a picture of the back of the slab that tels you the coin is genuine but not gradeable. Everything seems to be above board to me. The picture is bad so you can't judge the coin itself but you know it has altered surfaces so just treat it like bullion with a small premium. It has about $180 worth of gold in it so it is probably worth maybe $200. If someone wants to bid more than that, that's their problem.

It is clearly a PCGS slab and clearly shows the genuine label. Kena saved me the trouble of copying and pasting the stuff from PCGS (its on their site after all) so you all can see this is NOT a shady deal. Its simply a bad pic. I dont get this rush to presume everything being sold at ebay is shady or something wrong. Not to mention the seller has 100% positive feedback on at least 161 transactions. Again, NOT shady at all.

there is no grade on PCGS genuine slabs. They just slab problem coins that are genuine as genuine and put a code on the serial number which describes the problems if you know what the code means. I cant see the whole serial number but can see the last digit before the / is a 4 so I am guessing it is for altered surfaces because I do not see any thing that looks like a hole has been plugged unless it is down there near the date where it is so blurry. Either way it is a PCGS slab and is an authentic coin so I don't think anything is shady here
