Part 1
About a week ago, I got a 1936 no mintmark Buffalo nickel from a soda machine as I was dispensing more recent date nickels to try to get some old ones and along with the buffalo, I got a 1946, 1947 and 1948.

Part 2:
Then earlier today, I got another 1936 Buffalo nickel, but this one had a D mintmark. Then later in the day, I came across some vending machines on campus that I had never seen before (they were in a hallway) that connects two buildings; there was about 6 vending machines. I did the same method and got a 1945P War Nickel! As a bonus, I got some other goodies:

1940S (with a mintage number of 39,690,000)
1948
1959D
1969S
1969D
Assorted bunch of 1970's.

I'm not getting as many nickels from the 1970's in my spare change or from vending machines like I used to. Do you guys experience this as well?

I have noticed I come across more 1960s nickels than 1970s sometimes (largely in part because of 1964's!) but the 70's ones seem as if they are becoming more and more scarce.

Dan,

Never heard of your method- how does it work?

Also, wouldn't the age of the coins be recent as the vending machine operators would replenish the coins on their rounds?

Wpd7, all I do is take some coins of my own and one at a time, put them in the vending machine and press the coin return button. I've gotten a few goodies this way, some of which are coins from the 40s, 50s, 60s, a 1981 Canadian nickel, 1939 nickel, etc. I've never gotten a coin older than a 1936 Buffalo nickel though.

That's weird. Most vending machines I've used will return the same coins you put in.

Vending machines will typically give the same coins back only if there is a jamb. And the machine actually gets it's "change" from what customers put in it. It saves each denomination until the changer is full, then deposits the rest in a can/bucket the the vendor empties. I have had several machines for about 20 years now and only had to add change once or twice. So this method could definitely work, but the area must be pretty good where TheDanMan is because I don't see much in mine...last thing I remember is two 1959 black beauty nickels about two years ago.
