Greetings fellow collectors. I'm expanding upon my previous thread

"To grade, or not to grade"
https://goccf.com/t/91464

with followup pictures of my remaining commemorative collection. Feel free to comment on the best TPG to approach (thanks David). The goal is to qualify the investment for my heirs.

Today's featured coin is the 1936 S Columbia. Mintage was only 8007, although it remains one of my least favorite designs.

I have this same coin in a PCGS slab MS64 on ebay. Yours seems to have some issues on the reverse with some scratches and what looks like some staining. I would put it as MS63 as long as the staining does not effect the grade-ability.

Yes there are a few blemishes with this coin and the photos really seem to exaggerate them beyond what the eye can see. Difficult to compare with your offering on ebay, though. I suppose a PCGS slabbed coin doesn't require good photos, as it's qualified on that basis alone.

Sorry, my photos are through the slab and with an old film camera. Still yours is a nice piece and should bring over $200 maybe $250 if slabbed.

Excellent ... pleased to see you showing these off and willing to contribute my comments as time allows for each one.

First comment ... hopefully received as polite ... is to take the photos with the coin out of your hand and on a fixed surface.

This 1936-S Columbia is another classic silver half dollar that was caught up in the craze and eventual disgust of the time.

Assuming your comments on surfaces are correct ... this is IMHO a MS64 to MS65 coin ... lovely indeed.

To the question of TPG to select ... let's get this out of the way now ...

It depends on your goals ...

If you need authentication and a reliable technical grade then IMHO ANACS is preferred because there are no membership fees to pay.

If you need maximum re-sale value then PCGS is preferred because their slabs are always the highest priced in the market. Their cost is higher and you will need to join.

Great Columbia SC classic silver commemorative half dollar.

Looking forward to seeing what else you have.

David

Another fine example of me being on the wrong end of a craze (1980's version), but I'm a patient man (not that I would part with them either way).

You are absolutely correct about not holding them but it seemed the only way I could get the light play I wanted. Hopefully, by the time I finish with the lot, I'll be better at it.

These photos were shot outside with daylight balance. I'm considering doing a test pulling stills from an HD video camera. At least there are plenty of frames to choose from.

Stay tuned and thanks for your input.

My bad ... should have offered this in my original post to assist in some small way with your grading efforts ....

Compare yours against my PCGS MS66 CAC approved 1936 Philly mint Columbia ...

Enjoying your coins ... trying to add what I can.

Very nice indeed! Thanks for sharing.

Must admit, I had to look up "CAC approved". Even better.
