Just picked this up from a local dealer. What grade you think?

Many thanks, I'm learning a lot from your grading skills.

Bob

The small photos ... while well shot .. are difficult to see well enough to give a definitive grade assessment. Consider 800x800 @72 dpi next time ... much easier for us to see.

I'm going with XF40 ... with the following logic and one caveat ..

Caveat is the mark in the reverse fields above "V" ... appears to be a PMD dimple of some sort ... if this is correct most TPG would grade as a 'details' coin.

That said ... my personal obverse grading characteristic is the hair in Ms. Liberty head ... at XF40 there is some hair detail remaining left of the ear ... at XF45 there is most hair detail left of the ear ... at VF30 hair is mostly seen on the back of the head and between the ear and the coronet.

The weakness in the obverse stars is IMHO a strike issue and not associated with circulation wear.

Sooo .. XF40 obverse.

My personal grading characteristic for the reverse is the detail remaining in the wreath. Really can't tell from your photos ... but the overall appearance matches the obverse so I'm going with XF40 there as well.

Strike weakness (a common thing) is confirmed on the reverse by the lack of any detail that I can see in the corn cob on the left side of the wreath. If well struck ... even at XF40 some detail would be visible.

All-in-all a nice example of a tougher date for this series.

Many Thanks David,

Sorry for the small pictures, I'm just using a scanner (no camera, as any $$$ is for coins right now). There is detail in the corn cob and yes, there is a ding above the V. Of the 13 Stars, five have full detail. I had guessed at XF-40.

It appears almost problem free in hand (other than the ding), but there is a small dark blemish above the "T" in cents and a couple small dings in the rim.

It matches up well in my Dansco album alongside my 1883 No Cents. Got it for $70.

Nice coin, I agree about the XF. I'm just learning myself. I purchased the book Making the Grade published by Coin Values $39.95 Retail, But I'm sure you could get one a little cheaper. It is guide for grading the top 50 widely collected U.S. Coins

I'd say anywhere from VF-20 to maybe about EF-40
