I have been collecting paper currency for a while now, and I have about 160 bills from over 100 countries. I have been wanting to get a bill from every country in the world and then build my collection farther on that. I have been looking for a pre-Euro Irish pound banknote now. I have been looking in my standard catalog of world paper money, and just about all the Irish Pound banknotes have very high catalog value, $100 to $2000+. My question is, why are these notes worth so much more than ones from most other countries? The only thing I could think of is that most of them were destroyed when they were traded for euros and are now more rare because of that?

Very old Irish notes are worth quite a bit - the series just prior to the Euro shouldn't be that expensive to get - about £3-£5 will get you a pre-Euro Punt in good condition.

The older series are worth quite a bit because of the local interest here and because the print runs weren't that high compared to many other countries. Where I am (Nothern Ireland) there are four bank which issue their own notes - and they tend to be worth quite a bit more because of the smaller numbers printed.

Here are a few of mine picked up from circulation of local auctions

The only UK plastic note...

This note is really quite interesting. After the IRA stole 24 odd million from the bank in Belfast they changed the font on this series for only a couple of months before completely changing the seires. This is one of those interim notes that I picked up from circulation.

I assume you are interested in Scotland as a note issuing authority too?

I only have a couple of notes from the Republic of Ireland but a few more from the issuing banks of Northern Ireland.
As Bacchus2 points out, the Republic (pre-euro days) would have issued far fewer notes.
The Scottish banks, however, seem to take turns in issuing new notes and I have a lot more of those.
However, both Northern Ireland and Scotland far outstrip the BORING Bank of England in issuing newly designed or even differently dated notes.

Thanks for that link. Yes I am also interested in Scotland, Isle Of Man, Jersey and Guernsey pounds too. I have banknotes of Isle of man and Jersey that I got for a good price. Still looking for the others. I started my collection just buying anything and everything that I didnt already have, now I have focused on Ireland and the united kingdom and territories, and the middle east area.

Sadly, the only non-England notes I have are pictured below. Lots of coins, no notes. I do have a number of middle eastern country's currency, so email or PM me if you're interested.

Rick

You can email me. The second icon next to my name. The paper with the envelope thingy. Maybe that'll work.
