This picture of an old copper came out nicely with a mix of artificial and natural light. I didn't think I'd be able to capture the tinges of red still on the coin but there they are. This was done with a Panasonic FZ20 on a tripod with natural and halogen (desk lamp) lighting. I also used my coin stand as inspired by Bobby.

I like the way this one came out...
[urlShow-Some-Of-Your-Best-Coin-Images[/url]
I used a fluro desk lamp for lighting, the camera is a kodak CX6230. A very basic camera. It doesn't focus up close, so I have to use digital zoom. I also use the flash, but cover the bulb with white card to tone it down. Camera is hand held. I think I just broke all the rules of coin photograghy.

Taken with the same camera, using the same method.

The Barber half and the Large Cent were shot with a Nikon D-200 and a 60mm Nikkor Macro lense. The two British coins were shot with an Olympus C-770 UltraZoom on macro setting. All shots were taken using a tripod, and were done fairly close to the coins, maybe 4" to 8" distance. Color and contrast were corrected in Photoshop Elements, then the coins were "cut out" and put on a black background using the same program.

The camera I use is a JVC QC-QX3HD 3.3 Megapixel camera that I paid like 30 bucks for on ebay and I have used it for over a year but I think I am needing something a little better now

There are a number of different reasons to like particular photos, and not all of them involve accuracy. I like this set for accuracy:

Currently in Cisco's collection

These were pretty faithful, as well:

An Ebayer got this coin for $35

But, sometimes, you get lucky and the image, if inaccurate, becomes something more than it might otherwise. This is my personal favorite coin photo:

Show-Some-Of-Your-Best-Coin-Images
Went for the same price as the '78 above

You have to be careful. A small difference in lighting makes a big difference in the image:

1921-D VAM-1D with indirect lighting

Show-Some-Of-Your-Best-Coin-Images
Same coin, directly lit

...and sometimes the image can't be trusted at all:

Actual coin

Show-Some-Of-Your-Best-Coin-Images
10 minutes with Photoshop

I agree that the operator and lighting are far more important than the camera. However, sometimes having the right camera opens up opportunities that aren't available otherwise:

Show-Some-Of-Your-Best-Coin-Images

Show-Some-Of-Your-Best-Coin-Images
both shot with Canon S2 using Super Macro

Cheap isn't always bad:

QX5 microscope shot

Scanners have their place, too:

I've been photographing coins for about 18 months. Before that, I didn't know what "macro" meant. I'm still unsatisfied with the results of 99% of my shots.

Oh, yeah. The first 5 shots were taken with an identical camera to Metalman's - a Minolta Z2. It's a great camera, but has no image stabilization. That's why I bought the Canon S2 which the rest of the shots were taken with. The last pic is from my Epson V100 scanner @2400dpi.

@ Superdave
that photoshop touch up was very nice
not overdone , no atomic afterglow
only at pixelbreak up one can see under the chin that it was photoshopped ; which is ironical since this was the area that needed the least retouching
