OK. I have been playing around with my Canon S2. I dont have a tripod yet so I am shooting these pics freehand. Thank goodness this camera come with image stabilization. I figured I would start with an 1892-S Barber Half that I bought at a coin show last year. It was the only one at the whole show. My question is do you guys think it has been cleaned. I am hoping that my pics are good enough for you to form an opinion.

It may have been clean but a long time ago but it maybe the wear on the coin that make it look cleaned

Thats what I was thinking also.Jim if you don't have a tripod try using anything, like a small box or any solid object to rest your camera on while taking the pic.I have found most cameras in the macro mode, take exellent pics if your about 10 to 16 inches from the subject.I have taken some exellent pics resting my camera on a piece of tupperware.

Jim, the pics are excellent. Nice work!

I think it's just the wear making it appear cleaned. Even if it was cleaned in the past, I don't think it would make much difference in the value anyway as it would have been so long ago.

I agree with the others, If the coin was cleaned it was some time ago,, and at this point would probly not affect the coins value.

The pics look real good !!!

I agree, this is cleaned. A coin of this age and wear should accumulate dirt in its recesses(incuse). You can still see some remnants of that.

Thank you all for your input about the coin and the pics. When I purchased the coin I was a little hesitant because I thought that it might have been cleaned. But when I went to this local coin show I was determined to come home with an 1892-S as long as the rims were mostly complete and I could read the legends.

Since then I have seen some Barbers among other coins slabbed by PCGS and NGC that are basically worn smooth. So as a result I have come to think that it may not have been cleaned. One possibility I had not thought of was that maybe it was cleaned a long time ago.

Bottom line for me though is that I like the coin until the right 1892-S in in Fine to VF comes along.

Thanks again for all your input and opinions
