I was wondering why the mint keeps making them. I know I don't use them, and I would guess that most ordinary citizens don't use them and probably aren't even aware that they exist.
So why do we still make them?

I work retail, every once in a while some people spend them. Apparently, they would receive them in change at sporting events. Also, I know someone who works at a casino and they are pretty popular there.

I actually do put these into circulation if they aren't a date of any interest. I search occasional rolls from the bank and will put the ones I don't want to keep back into circulation to help keep or possibly strike coin collecting interest in others when they receive these in change, or buy them from a till. Someones gotta do it

Almost don't use ANY change at all, quarters for the parking meter occaisionally. Can't remember when I've seen a half in circulation, but it's been years!

I search rolls of them, so I spend as many as I can so I don't have to dump as many at banks. Some people freak out and ask where I got them, and I sell them rolls. Other people get mad at me. They hate the dollar coins worse though. I'm worried I'd get attacked if I tried to spend a SBA. They don't make them for circulation any more; just for sets and rolls and bags the mint sells to collectors.

I use them at the snack bar in the office. I also Use them to pay part of my meal bill at work at the MAF.

I think most of the halves from the late 80s and the 90s went straight to casinos for slot machines, because most of them have the reeding worn off and look like they've been through a garbage disposal.

I went to my local book store to pick up a copy of Coinage magazine and I spent 5 Sacagawea dollars and the clerk saud she couldn't talk them, so I had her call her manager.

That's crazy when clerks say they can't take something like that. Americans need to keep up more with what their minted currency is, especially people in the work place.

Exactly. When a clerk has to say I can't take these because they are not money, something needs to be done.

Yet again I have to say, it must be a regional thing. I've yet to have a problem spending halves. Or SBA's, $2 bills and Ikes. Occasionally I get dumbfounded looks, and a few stupid questions, but once they realize what it is, no problem. I have had people ask what denomination they are. I just respond, "what does it say on the coin"... I make an effort to acquire them when at the bank, then spend them to spread them around when ever I can. I earned a reputation at work. Don't ask Bowfin for change for the vending machines... One co-worker asked for change for a $5. he got a $2, a pair of SNA's and a half and 2 quarters. Sodas are 60ยข. He walked away shaking his head to see if somebody had change for a half... Now they ask if I have any "usable" change for the vending machines.

The mint keeps making them because I collect them!

I collect them, and my kennedy set would never be complete if the mint stopped making them.
