maineman750,

"MoneyPenny, finding a coin in circulation is not an indicator of authenticity"

In absolute terms, of course not. Not ALWAYS, in other words. Under logical circumstances, I'd take it as a good starting point... (kind of hard to get rich taking the time and effort to forge an excellent copy and then put it back into circulation to recover a 1 cent return!)

Notice I'm talking about "an excellent copy". Not a kid with a jackknife hacking a '44' into a '14'...

Based on the updated pictures I don't believe the coin to be authentic. The MM looks added.

Thad... really... added? I thought it had the diagnostics, except for a hit on the mintmark,I thought it looked O.K.

Thad, I am curious as well. I need to learn all I can on this one. What specifically are you seeing? The MM looks okay to me, but I would still prefer a better photo (or better yet, the coin in hand, as is how I always purchase them).

When any aspect of the MM is called into question I have to error on the side of caution. The MM is deformed and I cannot say it's due to damage or an alteration of some kind.....just my opinion.

I noticed that too and mintmarks on key date coins that appear to be damaged always creates authenticity questions. The interior opening of the D mintmark on a 1914D is a key diagnostic, it should be triangular but this one looks deformed from the mintmark damage. IMO, someone knowledgeable needs to determine authenticity of the coin by examining it in-hand for any possible signs of alteration. There is only so much you can determine from photos alone and for a potential $400 coin, you need to be certain.

Thank you guys, for your inputs. There seemed to be alot more interests for this coin than the other two..... I appreciate all the comments. Thank you Charles for explaining about the aspect of Market Grade for this coin. Thank you BadThad and biokemist6 for your inputs.

Well, I've bought this coin from a seller on ebay that I considered very trust-able. All of his coins are very conservatively graded. He has over 5000 feedback since 2001 and only 3 neutral for the 12 months period:
Feedback Ratings 1 month 6 months 12 months
Positive 290 999 1550
Neutral 0 0 3
Negative 0 0 0

Since with the questions raised regarding the mintmark AND the market grade prospect, I am planning to send this in PCGS. Have anyone had similar scenario and PCGS body bag the coin? Like I've stated, I want to put it in the album and no need to waste $18+ unless I have to.

Hey, it never hurts anything but your wallet to try. I'd send it in too. Like bio said, it's potentially a $400 coin.
