1830 Capped Bust Dime, Cud? - Coin Community Forum

BrokaToe Valued Member United States 175 Posts	Posted 06/28/2011 8:28 pm I found this 1830 Capped Bust Dime at an estate sale last week. I put it up on ebay and it sold for over $150.00. I know that this dime in this condition is not worth that much. So my question is this...Is that a Cud or some sort of mint error in the upper right quadrant of the coin? Thinking maybe that is why it was fought after to such a high price. Thanks for any help you can give me. Report this Post to the Staff

biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 06/28/2011 10:34 pm I do not think the Cud itself would give the coin that big of a premium but the Cud could be a PUP for a particularly uncommon variety with a steep premium. It looks like the die break extends to the upper left star. Report this Post to the Staff
BrokaToe Valued Member United States 175 Posts	Posted 06/28/2011 11:00 pm Yes, I noticed that as well. It kind of looks like an arrow point coming off the Cap of the Bust. Interesting that the die break doesn't seem to show in between the Cud on the rim and the end of the die break by the star. So you believe the Cud is not a Cud at all, but a PUP of another type of error? Report this Post to the Staff
SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 06/29/2011 02:50 am My guess is it's a VLDS (Very Late Die State) of a known variety (I don't know Capped Bust Dime varieties); that's an absolutely terminal Cud, after which very darn few coins could have been struck. Check your buyer's history, to see what he might have bought for dimes in the past. Might give you a clue as to your coin, if he's an early dime specialist. Report this Post to the Staff

It is actually the terminal die state for 1830 JR3. The Cud is illustrated in the new dime book (Zach et al., 2016). I am one of the coauthors and as someone pointed out a "dime specialist ".
