I've got about 45000 copper cents that are feeling their oats as well... But my stash is puny I'm sure, compared to some of the guys on this forum. Wonder who has the biggest stash of copper?

My stash is over $1000 face, haven't really counted it lately and am adding to it every day. I do need to get rid of some to buy some gemstones I have wanted for some time. Also need a few things for my pedal steel guitar.

Looks like another surge! We may hit $4.50 by weeks end, that would mean pre-82 cents worth 3 cents/each in metal value. My recent cent boxes are yielding about 18% copper,a drop from about 22% last year for me. Better get hoarding, this will be the last great metal accumulation at face opportunity in most of our lifetimes!

Anyone have a guess as to how high it will need to get before people start paying true melt value for the pre-82 cents? Looks like the most you can get out of them now is about 1.5x. Maybe 2x if you're really lucky. And selling them on ebay hurts big with the fees. Almost forgot: hockingzig, there's a big copper mine strike going on right now. Plus a recent report indicated that the quality of the copper being mined around the world was getting lower in quality meaning higher refining costs. Watch kitco's base metals site for the latest news.

gilpo,I have been following all those things recently. That's what makes me think $4.50 or even$5.00 is not far off.I think when melt hits 3 cents/each you will be able to start getting 2 cents each in quantity. I am holding my boxes till we hit the 3 cent mark then unload as many as I can for 2x face.

Non insulated copper wire is better. It's pure.
However, I am positive that coin dealers won't accept the stuff! (best to go top a scrap metal dealer)
I was collecting all sorts of scrap copper in the early 1960's, which I sold to my Dad's friend, who was a scrap metal merchant. I then went to the local coin dealer with my hard earned cash to buy coins. (silver florins in those days)

I can't imagine how anyone buying those boxes will think they're going up in value anytime soon. They're kind of stuck with them if they pay over face.

Gold is poor mens' diamonds. My other interest is gem faceting. My gem collection includes a few rough as well as cut diamonds. I do not regard them as investments. The four diamond examples in my collection take their place in a collection of about 200 other faceted gems, of all gem species. About half of my collection was inherited from my father, who also built my faceting machine. I have about 50 reference books on gemnology.

Sel_691,I also collect gemstones. I don't cut stones yet but I am thinking about getting a used rig and give it a try. I just bought a couple of small but nice demantoid garnets and a couple of small but super benitoites.

I don't think gold is poor mens diamonds. A 10 gram piece of refined gold will have the same value as any other 10 gram piece of refined gold, but a 1/2 carat diamond might not have the same value as another 1/2 carat diamond. Diamonds value is way more complicated, which makes diamonds harder to sell. Now collecting gems as a hobby is a different story.

hockingzig: If you ever get the chance, get to the biggest gem and mineral show in the World in Tucson.
Gems are like coins. If you are going to invest, you have to know your subject. I think I do know a bit about both, but I do not regard myself an investor in either. Nevertheless, both my gem and coin collections have significant value.
