coinsearcher, its not toning. They came this way from the mint. They put the planchets through a process called annealing where they heat the metal to a certain temp and allow it to cool at a certain rate so that the metal is more pliable making the stamping process of the coin much easier.

In the case of the black beauties, they were left in the oven too long and cooked until they turned black or dark. Thats why it is completely even all accross the coin and on edge. It is actually a mint error.

What do these sell for? I typically can never find them on ebay or at the coin shows I go to.

lukky, I'm not sure. I know they offered by one of the networks for something like 200, but thats a bit much IMO. I am testing the waters on ebay now and we shall see what happens.

Is the coloration of these just on the surface? I went through my little drawer of pre-1960 nickels because I remember getting some dark ones. Most of them look like they're just corroded or stained, but this one is still really glossy and shows little wear. The coloration is a little mottled, and the wear spots do show lighter metal underneath though. And it just happens to be a 1959.

Yeah, thats just a dark nickel. You can see the rim is silver and as you said, spots on the coin show the silver color under the tarnish.

As for on ebay, the only thing aside from my,listing I can find is this: http://cgi.ebay.com/1959-Jefferson-...em563c2222d4

Notice how he says LOOKS like a black beauty. Its an AU coin that has a details environmental damage, and says so right on the slab. Not many out there it seems.

Yeash...black beauty or not, I'm not sure I could bring myself to pay 30$ for that thing.

Was it only nickels that have the black tone or is it found on others?

ram, yes, only nickels.

OK, I put a 25 reserve on mine and it only made it to 20.50. Thats raw. Once I get them graded and designated, I would think a good bit more.

Still... you got half a roll of them? That's a pretty penny if you were to end up selling them.

I bought a BU roll of 58's (can't remember P or D) and almost all of them are dark. I'll get a few pictures up when I get home today. Some of them are so dark that they look to almost have environmental damage, but luster shows through. The other ones, which in my opinion are more attractive, are more of a gun metal black. Some are also a dark gold/bronze color. Pretty pleased with the purchase.
