Pulled this one roll searching last night. The first four photos are of the coin in question under different light sources. The next four are the same coin with a normal circulated 1958-D to the right of it for comparison under different light sources. The coin in question is more lustrous than my camera can capture. There are even 3 or 4 partial steps. Tell me what you think.

Oh no.... Are these desirable? I found one from sometime in the 70's a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was just dirty so I spent it.

seal, the black beauty was from 59. I have half a roll. I will take pics and see if I can get some good ones.

Yours is simply tarnished. Notice the marbling. A black beauty is exactly the same tone including the edge of the coin.

Nice coin for being 50+ years old in circulation....hard to tell about the steps though.

OK, here we go. 5 of mine. These are some of the darkest ones. Some were not quite as dark. seal, yours IS a keeper though. As Michael said, very nice for a circulated 58.

After playing with the settings on my camera, here are a couple more pics plus a closeup of the steps.

Like I said, nice coin, but not a beauty. I can see two good steps there. Not too shabby.

That reminds me of a 1940 nickel I found a couple weeks ago. Not black, but dark and lustrous and in very nice condition. Well, it's got some dings, but so little wear; it's the most remarkable condition I've found for a 71 year old coin from circulation!

I have found quite a few "Blue" nickels over the past year
when I purchase proof sets. The nickels are dark blue and really stand out over a normal nickel. Did some research and found that these nickels, while wrapped in the original packaging from the mint, will turn below if there is moisture inside their compartment. They are gorgeous to look at, I will have to post a pick of one of the five or so I have.

Um... Why are these so special? Just because the toning is popular?
