With zero silver to show for my efforts I go over from the last bank to a nearby restaurant and plop down a machine roll of dimes and 4 dollars worth of halves. The late teen-20s cashier gets a disgusted look on her face and stares at the coins for about 10-15 seconds.

'You're paying with this?'

'yeah...its money'

'I know what it is but a roll?'

Okay, I thought she'd be upset with the halves.
She gives me 4 dollars and change back on the 8ish dollar tab. I do a double take. What did she think I put down extra half dollars simply to impress her? For a split second I thought about simply walking away.

'Excuse me I think you gave me too much change'

'No I didn't you gave me 14 dollars look'

'Umm no look at this it says half dollar see?'

She finally admits her mistake and complains to her manager about how confusing all the weird stuff people come in with is. Her manager gently scolds her for a similar mistake earlier. I back off and sit down to eat. No silver but at least the food is pretty good.

That's a funny story. I've been paying with halves randomnly for over three years, and have never once heard a negative comment.

I've had a gas station attendant outright refuse to take them and an excessively amazed McDonalds cashier but yeah its usually smooth sailing.

They give you silver? Amazing. I thought all tellers kept it for themselves or family members.

It is becoming more and more common for people not to want all the so called odd, strange, wierd coins around. More and more counterfeits are popping up since the counterfeiters well know people just don't know anymore what is real. A never ending array of different Quarters, silly never ending baby sized dollars, $2 bills, strange backs on pennies from 2009 to now, what can you expect. And then too there are those really large coins that say Half Dollars with a person on them that kids just never heard of before. Just how much do you expect our younger generation to put up with? Remember they have to spend so much time knowing all about computer games, how to text on their camera phones, etc.

I had a grocery store clerk try to tell me the 10 halves I gave her were $50 instead of $5. Took a bit to tell her they were half dollars coins, not $5 coins.

So you gave her $5.00 (50 dimes) and $4.00 (8 halves) and she counts it as $14.00 instead of $13.00 (she is counting the halves as dollars) Sigh...now we know why their registers have pictures instead of numbers.

Yup I'm pretty sure it was 13 dollars since I got 4 dollars and change back on the 8 dollar tab. So I probably misremembered the 14 bucks

Some tellers know their stuff. I was hunting for halves and one even asked the others if they had Ikes. Most of them probably don't know what an Ike is...
