Hi coinsfolk,
I've got two Australian mint sets, 1984 and 1985. I do not trust to government packaging and tear down all mint sets I have and put the coins inside capsules. I've done this practice with UK, US and Turkey mint sets. I've also checked from the catalog and see 1984 20c and 1985 50c are somehow rare. So what do you suggest, should I tear those sets apart and take all the coins into capsules and move them to my trays or leave the sets as they are?

Australian mint sets in those years are best kept in the "goverment packaging" even though the outer plastic in some turns yellowish, coins uneffected

Strangely some sets are worth more as individual coins than as a complete set?
Where original packaging is not very good quality, I prefer to remove the coins and put into better storage eg. capsules. Keep the sleeves and outer packaging. This problem seems to be less with later years for Australian sets -obviously quality of packaging has been improved.
The worst examples I have seen is New Zealand 1967 (first year of decimal) proof sets. The plastic goes all cloudy and spotty (looks like mould) and it is almost impossible to see the coins. These were packaged by London mint.

Jeff, I have that 1967 NZ Mint set, I know what you mean. Mint cello goues all spotty and cloudy over time, and it's next to impossible to get a good glance of the coins. However, that mint cello London and Australian mint uses keeps the coins almost in full lustre. I have pierced a Isle of Man 1978 set, which had a very bad cello, however, the coins were amazingly good preserved.

Certainly all RAM issued Australian decimal mint set folders from 1966 to 1983 had plastic that sweated and toned the coins and did not protect them

I have the 1967 NZ speciman set bought 20 years ago in the bubbled celophone type packaging and all coins had full lustre and now they still have,no even a carbon spot
