Hello,

I think this coin may have been buried but I gave up on trying to clean it: too much effort required.

Please give it a grade in its current state and a different grade (if applicable) if I spend the time to remove the gunk with a porcupine quill etc.

I have already soaked it in olive oil for 5 months, then washed with hand detergent/water with a final rinse/q-tip with 100% pure acetone etc.

Thanks,
mdpmedia

EF-40 details

Obviously there's corrosion, but the olive oil acids have damaged the surfaces too.

I was unaware of the acids in olive oil but became suspect of using olive oil when I noticed that the color of the olive oil turned blue over time.

I assume that this blue color is a bi-product produced similar to when copper wrist bracelets turn the skin blue as a result of the amino acids in human skin etc.

What can one immerse coins in as an alternative to olive oil to remove those difficult to remove surface substances?

I'll bet that coin got buried soon after it was issued in 1912, olive oil may have done a bit more damage to it, shame, it would have been a nice coin.

I don't know if Thad's Verdi-Care treatment will help or not, it also, does look like EF-40 details to me.

The solution turned blue from the copper-acid complexes that formed. VC definately would have been more effecitve and much faster than using oil. All without the damaging effects of the acid.

Its technical details still come across nicely; I could go high-EF on it, too, cleaned a little corroded, of course.
