I see rolls of uncirculated or at least AU modern coins being sold all the time on ebay. My question is, where are these originally acquired? I looked at the mints website and there is no mention of them. So are they just randomly acquired from banks when requesting a roll of some denomination? This is probably a pretty simple question but I can't seem to find the answer. Thanks

by modern do you mean 2011? I go to the bank and get boxes of cents, nickels, and dimes, and I often get a whole box full of brand new 2011 coins. and last year I was getting the 2010 rolls. so most people probably get them from banks. if they are more than a year or two old then people probably got them from banks years ago and saved them.

if they bought the coins straight from the mint, I believe they would have a wrapper that would show that.

The key is to have a nice bank ( one that stresses local activities and being friendly), be considerate, as it is not usually their place to provide bulk coins free for retail customers compared to the more expensive business accounts as mine has to pay fees to obtain a box. So usually they have to order ahead of time, and they are saving the boxes for commercial needs. One of my friends takes the tellers coupons and gift certificates for food places, and they even call him when old bills come in. ( social engineering). After a great run in 2009 getting boxes of all 4 types, I took each teller a vf Indian cent, and gave the vault teller also a nice common Buffalo nickle for his kid. Maybe it is wrong and takes some time :) but it works. I don't go in every day, just about once a month. last time was a full box of 2011-D cents.
