I am curious if anyone here has bought directly from Silvertowne? I've been looking at their web site and they seem to have pretty good prices on their 10-oz. silver bars. They even offer free shipping sometimes.

Also, has anyone bought any of those 10-oz. NTR silver bars from Provident? They look decent and are wrapped in plastic for protection but I have not heard of them before. Even if these bars are the same .999 silver as other mints produce, selling a no-name product can be difficult sometimes.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from SilverTowne. I live about 30 miles away and have met the owner personally. He is an honest man who is active in the local coin clubs. The business has gotten very big and there's a lot of people working there and I've heard stories that some are a little snooty but I've never experienced that. I don't buy from there anymore since I have to pay state sales tax so I can't offer a recent opinion. I have seen their prospector rounds and bars command a slight premium over more generic ones since they do have a good reputation. hope this helps.

I have not bought from them Ed, but I have their site saved and I like the fact that they do offer some competitive prices, and some free shipping and have a pretty good selection....

I noticed right off the $40.43 Eagles, graded ms-69 eagles for $50 bucks, and ms-70 for $84 bucks. And even Ingot prospector bars for $36.53, or 5 oz bar of the same brand and make for $182.82 and all the fore mentioned with free shipping, not bad at all....

There prices are great, and the free shipping helps a lot too. You can buy a silver bar at APMEX, but then you gotta pay 12$ for shipping
Rest in Peace

I used to buy their enameled Christmas Holiday Rounds for my wife, but I fell off the buying wagon a few years back (and she still lets me know about!). I never had an issue with them!

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. I appreciate being able to tap into the experience of those who know MUCH more about things than I do. It really helps when getting into something like collecting PMs!

I will add Silvertowne to my list of suppliers.

I just bought an Early Release 2011 S mint ASE from Silvertowne for $49 and it is graded MS69 by NGC. I've seen them selling for $79 up from all of the TV guys and magazine ads. Inthink I will be dealing with Silvertowne much more in the future because they aren't trying to rip you off on the hottest new Eagle item. I appreciate someone dealing with me in a fair manner.

Went to their website. Sale on 1 oz. prospector bars $39.13. Silver closed at $36.71 on Friday. So a premium of $2.42 isn't bad at all. Compare to what there going for on the bay. Plus FREE shipping if you buy that particular item. A bonus! Now where is my wallet!

Yeah, I know the feeling. I'm kind of drooling over their house brand 10-oz. silver bars. They look real nice, have a specific serial number, and can be had encased in plastic to protect them from air and hands. Oddly enough, Silvertowne doesn't mention plastic packaging but Provident sells them that way. That's a nice touch and will keep these bars looking great for years. Silvertown also offers free shipping on some items and that is a pretty nice bonus for sure.

I'm actually thinking about buying 10 of their one ounce bars. You can buy a 10 oz bar for a few cents less, but it makes more sense to have the smaller bar usually the smaller the more premium.

You would have to buy 500 bars from APMEX for it to be cheaper, and that's not including shipping...

Funny you should mention 500 bars. That is about the amount I am considering, only as 50 ten oz. bars.

This will be a bulk purchase, although I might want to space it out a bit in time so that I won't be buying it all at a single price... a dollar cost averaging into the position, as it were.

It makes more sense to me to have the bigger bars so that I don't have to have 500 1-oz. bars in storage. The fact that they are a bit cheaper per oz. means that I will end up with a few more ounces as well. If I was buying a smaller dollar amount, then the 1-oz. bars would be fine. I have ASEs for my 1-oz. size.

I don't like the 100 and 1000 oz. bars, though. They are too big for my needs. If I need something more valuable than the 10-oz. silver bars, it is time to move up to some 1/2 and 1 oz. gold bullion coins.

As a college student I don't have the funds for 500 bars, I wish I did! But I was actually thinking about 10-15 1 oz bars, and another 1/10 oz gold eagle, or maybe a half Indian :)

I can understand that... been there and done that!

All of the things that you mention would make great additions to any PM collector's hoard. I say, go for it!

The thing about collecting PMs is to buy what you can, when you can. That way, your collection will build nicely over time and that IS the name of the game.
