After much reading and scouring through the Red Book, I have decided that my collection will start with Military commemoratives and Morgan dollars minted in New Orleans. I was in the Navy and I have much respect for our military and I am from New Orleans and have been to that mint many times. The military coins that I would like to start with are the 91-95 WWII half dollar and dollar set. If anyone has and set that they can part with or a Morgan minted in NO, please let me know. I am trying to start small. I have had a blast pouring through all the jars of change around my house the last few days. Found a 91,93,95, and 98 kennedy's, 4- 2000 sacagawea's, the 4 Lincoln pennies from 09, and nothing spectacular, but it was fun! I am still trying to figure out this cameo and deep cameo thing? Thanks in advance for any help! Jason

Who Dat! Tigers and Saints all the way! I'm only about an hour up the road from ya! I'm from Buras, LA but live in Purvis, MS since Katrina.

I read somewhere once that to tell if a Morgan dollar is cameo or deep cameo, hold it up to a ruler. If you see 2 inches reflected on the coin, it is cameo, but if you see 4 inches, the coin is deep cameo. Maybe it was 3 and 6 inches. I don't really know. But good luck and happy collecting!

Welcome! We are in the Big Easy as well. There is a coin show coming up in Kenner that is small but we get good finds there, let me know is you want details. There are a lot of local dealers who attend it.That is where I usually get my best deals. edit: I just realized you are my first welcome amd I am now a valued member

I'm originally from just north of NOLA myself. I grew up just across the state line in SW MS. My dad was a huge Saints fan who passed away and left me his collection (and his Saints cap). He fortunately got to see them win it all right before he passed. I actually met Drew Brees a few months later at a game, and he signed that cap. It means more to me than the coins!

CoinsKelly, I would love the details of the show. Thanks so much. CPC24, I bet it does, especially knowing what kind of person Drew is. I have met him a few times myself. I sure hope that they get the season started on time this year, I really like what we have done with the team.

repj, I'd always heard he was a great guy, but had no idea until I met him. Total class. He wasn't at a home game, but still signed everything that was handed to him. It may not be New Orleans, but the coin shop has lots of Mardi Gras doubloons...

I believe there are currently 13 military based commemorative dollars from the US mint. Here are some examples of some of them. 2005 Marine Corps 2002 West Point 1994 Prisoner of war Museum

It is the Crescent City Coin Club. All shows are conducted in the same location where the club meets, the DoubleTree Hotel 2150 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Kenner, LA 70062. The show is Saturday, July 9 (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and Sunday, July 10 (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). They mention that there will be 20 booths, like I said small, but we usually do well there.

Sounds like a nice way to start collecting. Our Son is active duty Army and I've just begun to start collecting the same type of commemoratives. First one was the 2010 Disabled American Veterans Silver Dollar. Very nice detail. I'm hooked, and ordered another just for me. Have fun. I'm also new to collecting.
