I posed a question in the TPG forum about which grading services are best for high end commemoratives.. No responses, so perhaps this forum will have more insight:

If you are not sure about my particular question, which TPG do you prefer for classic commemoratives?

I'm going to have the opportunity to purchase some high end classic commemorative coins.. Hawaiian, Spanish Trail, Hudson, etc..

The three coins you listed in your other thread are some of the serious tough coins of the Classic US Silver set ... and relatively expensive in mid to high MS state.

You did not mention the grade at which you expect to acquire them ... but for example an MS64 Hawaiian is a $3K plus coin.

My opinion as a collector of these coins is that I do not even look beyond NGC and PCGS. IMHO ANACS coins are not a player in this higher-end commemorative market and never will be. Their vaunted authentication services do not bring any extra value to the classic commemorative series and their comparable coins are always valued (ie priced) the lowest amongst the big-3 TPG.

For absolute maximum resale value I would always select PCGS and put up with their higher fees and slower turn-around times. Like it or not, their coins bring a 10% + premium over comparable NGC graded coins in this particular series.

Last thought ... if you are truly talking about MS examples ... and an MS66 Hudson is a $3K coin as well ... then you will maximize you re-sell potential by also submitting them to CAC and earning a green beanie (if the coins qualify).

I realize that is a lot of submitting ... PCGS then CAC ... but the best combination of certifications in today's commemorative marketplace are PCGS/CAC approved.

You don't have to like it ... and we can debate the influence of TPG and CAC ... but that is the market reality today.

I actually dont know the grades of these yet.. I just have the price the guy paid for them, and the type of coin. So.. I'm pretty excited to lay my eyes on these. My hope would be to sell the majority of them, and keep a few of the rarities.. Maybe keep the Hawaiian/Isabella or Hawaiian/Spanish Trail and sell the others (assuming all are equal, which I'm sure they are not). Out of these, which are the toughest to find good examples of? Not just the most expensive, but the ones that I'd later regret selling :) This is the list of coins which I could buy:

Antietam
Bay Bridge
Booker T. Washington Silver Half
Boone Silver Half
California
Colombian Exposition Silver Half
Colombian Exposition Silver Half
Gettysburgh
Grant
Hawaii
Hudson
Isabella
Lafayette
Pan Pacific
Pilgrim
Pilgrim Silver Half
Pilgrim Silver Half
Spanish Trail
Stone Mountain Silver Half
Stone Mountain Silver Half
Stone Mountain Silver Half
Washington/Carver Silver Half
Washington/Carver Silver Half

Lincoln Silver Half
Alabama Centennial Silver Half
Monroe Silver Half
Lexington-Concord Silver Half
Sesquicentennial Silver Half
Great Lakes Silver Half
Long Island Silver Half
Long Island Silver Half
Alabama
Albany
Arkansas
Boone
Bridgeport
Cincinatti
Cleveland
ColumbiaSC1
Connecticut
Deleware
Elgin
Ft Vaccouver
Huguenot
Iowa
Lexington
Lincoln
Long Island
Lynchburg
Maine
Maryland
Missouri
Monroe
New Rochelle
Norfolk
Oregon Trail
Roanoke
Rhode Island
Robinson
San Diego
Stone Mountain
Sesqui
Texas
Vermont

Thanks for the info about PCGS... I was leaning that way for the high end ones.. but wasnt sure where the cutoff was. Perhaps coins under $400-$500 dont really need to be encapsulated (I would perhaps lose money with the fees).

Once I get them I'll be sure to post pictures of the keys/semi-keys for everyone's thoughts.

Sooo ... put your eyes on them and send along some clear pictures that we can help you with.

Your listing above is a lot of coins ... some serious keys ... some semi-keys ... and some 'common' coins if that term could apply to the classic US silver commemorative set.

I can certainly pick the key coins from your list above ... but refuse to speculate on potential value ... grade is the determining factor ... need clear photos and then we can help.

Sure - will post pics as soon as I get them. I hope it's sooner rather than later :)

I'm hoping that he collected quality -- I believe he did.. But I wont know for sure until I see them. His price on the Hawaiian was 1095, Spanish Trail was 759.. Which either leads me to believe they are not high MS coins, or he bought them a while ago and these are his purchase prices.

Back for one more crack at your original question ...

All series of coins contain what I would call "condition rarities" ... coins that demand a huge price jump from one grade to the next. These are always the tough ones!

In your huge list of coins there are a few that might qualify as condition rarities ... again depending on their grade.

MS64 Monroe Doctrine is $500 ... MS65 is $3200.

MS64 Sesqui is $600 ... MS65 is $4500.

There are others on your list as well ... it all depends on grade and eye appeal of the coins.
