I don't know why but I've been wanting to buy a Proof Buffalo. The looks of that coin just draw me in. There's an antique dealer in town that has a nice little coin case. Right there sits a 2009 Buffalo Proof ounce coin with the box, COA, outer box, and the original shipper box from the mint. He wants $1700 for it and won't budge on the price. I'm very tempted to add this to my collection, but I'm not sure if Proof coins are worth $150 premium over the bullion variety. I've wanted one for awhile, but just wondered if any of you have an opinion of this coin. I think I'm going to buy it tomorrow if it looks nice through the 10X loupe.

Looking on ebay that looks pretty close to right. There are a few slabbed out there for close to that price also. Too much for me, I'm a silver guy. Have fun!! |

You know what I will say, lol....
I figure what is $150 bucks on a purchase that size, as those are probably one of the top sought after 1 oz. (modern day) gold coins on the planet, I figure at least in the top five, and I would put it number one on my list....
I found one I had for years in my drawer, (via an old nickel), and even though it is in decent shape for a coin that old circulated, but the date is rubbed off, and the coin is very smooth now, my lucky pocket piece now, lol....
Now then, I personally would shop around online and see if I could find one for $1600, who knows someone who could really use $1575 may let it go for that, or even less even though that is probably unrealistic....

I know exactly how you feel. While I always appreciate the numismatic perspective of coins, I find myself going after the bullion and collect as much as possible and only the best brands ( ASE / E / JM etc). That applies to silver when I buy and it certainly applies to gold. When it comes to gold, I try to own as much as I can close to spot. No exceptions. If you sell me a St Gaudens close to spot (+ a little premium - which I get) then we might have a deal. If you sell me a St Gaudens which is in nice condition for $2k+ - I'll be passing because again, I want to reinvest that money in gold. I appreciate the condition of the coin, but it's the weight I'm going after. Ironically, I saved enough to own both a bullion 1 oz Pamp & a 1 oz 2007 Gold Buffalo (NGC 69). While both have its own character, they are just 1 oz of fine gold built differently in their own way. I say get it but close to spot. I suggest checking out a coin show / other dealers / online if accessible. Good luck. |

If I had that kinda money to throw arouund.... amazing looking coins... but I usually stay away from proofs, unless I can get a really good deal on them

Go to a local show or a bigger flea market. I have seen several for $45-75 over spot two weeks ago at the local flea market. ebay is always more expensive because of all the fees the fees associates. |

APMEX is selling 1-oz. gold Buffaloes for $1596 + shipping. Not that these are proof or anything but they are gorgeous BU grade coins. I'm with the OP on his assessment of proof coins. If I can get them for a reasonable premium, fine. If not, then Au and BU works for me.

Buffaloes are gorgeous in gold, IMO. Too bad it's not a proof from the year before, I'd gladly pay $1700 for a 2008.
My favorite in this series is the burnished $10 Buffalo, it's the closest in size to the original.

IF you plan on keeping it for yourself and NOT for resale then I would get it from the mint unless you want a 2009 proof buff.
Who knows how many different times a US mint collector coin has been flipped / picked through in the secondary market. IF you can find a ONE owner coin from someone you can trust then it's a different story.
Recently someone on another forum got a US Mint gold coin (recent issue / release) in the secondary market which came back from PCGS as being cleaned.

I'm still tossing it over. I have a BU 2006 Buffalo that I got for just over spot a few months back and another one that I picked up back when they were around $1200. I want a proof, but I'm just having trouble spending $500 more than I did on my first uncirculated Buffalo. However the move in gold over the last two days may have put me in the buyer's position tomorrow. I think I will buy it but I'll have to swallow hard before I do. It is a very deep cameo and that keeps haunting me.

Just imagine when you hold that shiny buffalo coin. Slowly you forget about the $ premium you just paid. Over time, it slowly comes back (hopefully) - Just like you did @ $1200. Good Luck!

Well, I bought it for $1650. The coin is one owner bought new by the antique dealer. The original shipping carton has his name and shop address on it. It is very pristine as is the packaging and paperwork. Now my only problem is two Indian Half Eagles lost in Postal Land. It is registered mail and well insured so I guess that it's their problem and not mine. The only problem iwill be how much gold goes up in the next six months while I'm waiting for them to pay the claim. Registered Mail shipped last Friday should have made it to NGC by Tuesday so something bad is going on. Thank God for Registered Mail I guess! At least I'll have my shiny new Buffalo to console me.

Congrats, that is one great proof Buffalo for 1650 I am sure, pictures when you get time please....
Tough luck on those 2 half Eagles. Hang in there you never know, but worse case six months, that is a tough break, yet another notch in the favor of the local coin guy perhaps....

I have yet to master the simple task of posting pictures on the web. I just bought a scanner, so I'm hoping that will work for me as I don't have a digital camera. I'm spending too much on gold and silver. I'll try to get something up as soon as possible Hawk. thanks for the props!

No worries, minus a digital camera it is a step by step process. But with a scanner you should be good.... I will say, if you ever plan to sell online in any fashion, a good digital camera is a key investment, and you probably could short yourself one of those nice gold 2.5 beauty's and get one with that, lol.... What I love about the digital camera, snap a couple pictures, pull out the little memory card, plug it into your computer, open it up and look at file, go to this site and re-size in easy step by step process, rename new file, load it up, and post..... I will say back in my days when I was fishing often, I would keep a DISPOSABALE camera on me at all times. Fill it up, take it to Walgreen's, and pick up an hour later. I always liked those little turn in cameras, as opposed to an old bulky obsolete camera, that you don't wanna get catfish slime on, lol.... Edited by Silverhawk74
