Ahhh, memories of my high school chemistry class. Zinc plating over copper is pretty easy to do... I highly doubt the entire coin is composed of entirely of zinc, that would mean there would have been an entire metal ingot of zinc (or zinc alloy) rolled into sheets, then cut into planchets, etc...
