Copper ones weigh about 3.1 grams and zinc ones weigh about 2.6 grams

They can be either composition, the old 95% copper(3.1 Grams) or the new zinc copper plated (2.5 Grams).

Someone on this forum told me a good way to tell which one they are. Just cant remember who..
Anyway, you let one unidentified 82 penny rest on the tip of your finger. Lightly tap the edge of it with a zinc penny. You should hear a ring for a second or two. If its just a thud, the 82 is zinc.

Or just drop them on a table/countertop..

The copper coins will ring, zinc coins will.. Kinda just fall there and thud, like any lame-Ish coin would do ( just joking)

Compare the sounds known copper and zinc pennies make..

I tried dropping them on a table and listened for the ring of copper pennies. I guess I don't have the ear for it because it did not work for me, no matter how many I tried. But after some practice I found that holding 1 in each hand and comparing the weights works pretty well for me. Of course I have a scale to weigh them to verify my assumption. I was right about 80% of the time.

I don't like or trust my judgement calls, so I use a digital scale on any '82

Fuzzy317: What kind of scale do you use? Is a digital postage scale a good way to go?
