This Flying Eagle cent has a nearly straight bite taken out and I'm wondering if it might be a clipped planchet error. I expect it's more likely post-mint butchery but I would like to hear from our resident error specialists. I've included close-ups of the clipped edge and of the obverse rim directly across from the clipped area. Any opinions? Thanks!

Looks good to me. The way the rims fade out into the clip with that reverse slope is typical of real clips.

Tapered rim edges and weak AME are sure signs of an incomplete planchet

How many clipped FEC do you think exist? That's probably a rare coin!

After I read the replies to this topic I emailed Fred Weinberg (you know, the eminent error specialist) and he confirms this is a clipped planchet, worth $80 or so if I want to sell. Good news, and I thank you for your input!

This was in a box of mixed world coins I got from an elderly relative. There were several old US coins including holed and worn-out examples of large cent, 2-cent, and 3-cent coins, plus two "damaged" Flying Eagle cents. One had been hammered nearly flat on the reverse and the other was this clipped coin. Apparently my relative assumed it was junk and threw it into the box with all the other rejects. My good fortune for sure!

This coin rounded out my ANACS submission. Their verdict was....

nice clip. Farily rare on the FE's. What did ANACS give it?

Awesome coin, I like the FE's and having an error on it makes it cooler.

I'm beginning to feel like a broken record, throwing VF20's at you.

The edge detail on the clip is interesting. Obviously a genuine clip, but if due to an overlap of another punch, wouldn't you think the edges would be cut cleaner? Is this possibly a clip on the end of coining stock, or a partially ragged clip?

That begs the question, "What does the inside of a standard Flying Eagle planchet look like?" I wonder what you'd see if you accurately sectioned ( ) a "good" FE?

Very good question--I honestly don't know what the inside of a punched-out CuNi FE coining stock looks like I have only seen the rims on upset/struck FEs, which look reasonably smooth, unless there's a planchet defect.

great clip obverse also shows blakesly effect which is important in any clipped planchet example! Great find!
