Hey anyone have any realistic idea as to the grade and value of this one. I just picked it up last week at a local auction for 35 bucks. Didn't think that was a bad price because I feel its in really great condition. Also where would you recommend I send to for grading? Thanks!

These 1881-S morgans are often pretty well struck, so even though I would grade it around 64/65, I don't think slabbing would be necessary.

I'm not good at grading but '81 are known for really good strikes.I am going to take a guess and grade yours at MS63/64. I personally would not have it TPGed.

An easy MS63 (with MS64 not improbable, in hand).

and

Probably not worth slabbing unless you REALLY want to.

Numismedia collector values;

MS-61 $48
MS-62 52
MS-63 66
MS-64 86
MS-65 206

I don't think that it would pull a MS-65, still a nice looking type Morgan!

However, if you get ahold of one of ANACS specials (10 silver coins for $119, max value of $500 each), http://www.anacs.com/PDFFiles/ANACS....pdf#zoom=75

I like the reverse, the OBV face is nice in the photo but the outer chatter is a little alarming for anything better than MS63,,,remember this is one of the best years with tremendous amounts of this year and mint available...

Except in the case of PLs and DMPLs?

the overall concern, IS..the overall cost of your purchase price and submission costs, which is ruffly $40/50 bucks with shipping and handling if its not a high valued coin...then the price goes up...
ERGO's the problem...
If I buy say..a RAW 1881-s that looks MS64 for $70 bucks..the listed retail price at PCGS today is $94 in MS64
I just invested more with the slabbing service than the coins worth...Remember PCGS pricing is not what the dealers pay so your at a loss,, Lets just say it looks PL or DMPL....THEY HAVE been very stingy on accepting any of those designations
this past year...although there coins of the past carry the same designation...which you probably will not receive..
if you could get the designation the coins value really jumps up and its worth the investment, but chancy ..I've heard of very few that have been accepted over this past year...and its due to the money and the amount of said coins allowed into the population which will decrease the values of said coins....of any year..some coins are better appreciated by individuals rather than the TPG's which control there own said values....

Let me get this straight. TGPs grade not on technical merit but on Marketability AND whether or not giving the coin its proper grade will affect the market? You're kidding right?
Rest in Peace

It definitely has MS details to me, but it sounds like I'm in the minority when I say it looks cleaned. The fields are too shiny, I see some hairlines and I see very little luster. Definitely not worth grading, but still a fair buy for $35 being that it has so much detail. Congrats!

JMKENDALL one must remember...even thought there are the photo guides, and guide lines for BASIC grading standards...
WHEN certain years such as this...are available by the millions/ hundreds of thousands for IMPECABLE strikes and detail...Will these all be given MS65 or MS66?
if so the value will be about $50 bucks a coin...due to the laws of supply and demand...the fact is there are too plentiful. SO....minor infractions FOR THIS YEAR...are enforced....So out side in certain examples or years VS mint marks,,, the standards don't truely apply,...graders know.. and control how many get into the market for the higher grade coins in any given year and mint mark. 1881-s has so many fine strikes, very plentyful...so not so high priced...but at times you can find a very nice coin like this that is not over priced but undervalued...for its detail and strike!!This coin has toooo many hair lines and lack of fine strike points to even get close to MS65 for this year..PERIOD..MS 64 would be a fair grade...

Well...I just feel that a coins grade is a coins grade...regardless of what it does to the market. If I pay my money to have a coin graded and, for the sake of discussion, it is fully worthy of an MS66DMPL grade; then I expect it to be so graded. I do not expect the TGP to say...well...this would bring the value down of the only OTHER MS66DMPL...so we are going to grade it MS64PL. That almost seems like fraud to me. Taking money for a service you do not perform in a uniform and impartial manner. That almost sounds like market manipulation. Just my opinion.
