Hi Folks I realize this Morgan dollar is a common date and only worth melt value. Just curious what the approx grade may be. There is a gouge underneath the o of the word of on the reverse side. also does it appear to have been cleaned. Thanks for any info. Edited by spring423 07/16/2011 9:28 pm

woah! I hope you have that thing in a holder, this coin is worth WAYYY more than melt.
the grade looks like an MS-65 and a really good shot at 66. id say its worth sending in.

I agree with Adam on the grade, it's definitely a choice MS-65 example. In addition, this 1879S Morgan is of the Third Reverse variety, which you can see by slanted top arrow feather and the convex breast design on the reverse. If it were of the Second Reverse variety (parallel top arrow with a concave breast), it would be worth upwards of $8,000 as a choice MS-65 example. However, being Third Reverse, it's only worth about $200 in MS-65, most likely a bit more for its superb quality, according to the Red Book (can't seem to find my current grey sheets). A very nice coin, though!

It does look like a MS-65. The reverse looks PL but not so sure about the obverse.

Piffin No no test. I was told that most common date Morgans are basically only worth melt or slightly more then melt. I've had this one and approx 14 others for approx 25 yrs. Most of the other one's look to have been cleaned. I was told that it was common practice back then to do that.

Just like junk gold dealers ""YOU"" only hold junk coins he's going re-sell at a tremendous profit...May perhaps be common but hardly a common grade you have there...I'll take all your commone coins like that for melt any time

I just wanted to be sure. My interest has shifted towards commemoratives. I plan to use them (Morgans) at several coin shops as possible trade and get a few commemoratives.

i would really consider sending this one in, you wont ever get 66 money from a dealer unless its in plastic, proven to be a 66
