I've been looking into getting a few commemoratives recently. The 2001 SIlver Buffalo looks like a really nice coin, but from what I've seen, they can be very expensive for the silver content. Anyone know why they are so expensive? All of the proof and uncirculated silver buffalo's I've seen on ebay have been $100 and up, while something like the 2007 Jamestown silver coins have been around $40-$60.

It all has to do with popularity, not to mention that commemoratives are typically not valued on their silver content alone. Almost a half million Proof and Unc Buffalos were minted but even those huge numbers were not enough to satisfy collector demand so prices shot up and have stayed fairly high in comparison to most other modern commems.

I may just have to buy some. While they do seem somewhat expensive, it would still be a nice addition to my collection. At least it's still cheaper than paying for the gold buffalo.

The design is the beloved Buffalo nickel and I believe it was the first time the mint brought back that beautiful design, so collectors jumped all over the issue selling out in record time. I personally think that the dies were not cut deep enough to faithfully recreate Franklins original design from 1913. Currently the mint is producing the one ounce Gold Buffalo coin with the same design and this time they got it right. Those big pure gold Buffaloes are in my opinion even a slight improvement over the beauty of the original Buffalo nickel design. If you stock up on the silver coins you should easily be able to sell them down the line because there is still incredible collector interest in the 2001 issue even after ten years.

The 2001 Buffalo commemorative is one of two 21st Century commemoratives that sells for more than melt, the other being the Lincoln Bicentennial dollar. The proof coin really brings the design out, and if you are interested in the uncirculated version, there's even a Coin & Currency set that has good background information on the design and the usage of Native American imagery on Federal banknotes, stamps and coins.

As for the Gold Buffalo, the one and only year the mint issued fractionals was 2008. My burnished 1/4 oz is holdered along with a high grade Type 1, it is amazing to have them together, since the gold is only a mm larger than the original. Really wish the mint would issue the Buffaloes in smaller weights again.

Nice idea for a presentation Bizybackson. I would love to see a pic of those coins next to each other!
