Just found this really strong die clash today while finishing off a nice box of nickels.

I didn't notice the weakness in "UNUM" until I was taking pictures, so I took a closer look at the obverse. I think there's also a thin Cud along the edge in the date area, and corner of the bust. It's hard to be sure because the coin is pretty beat up from circulation. That would also be the cause of the significant weakness in the lower part of the hair?

That is a neat find I don't know anything about die clashes. They do look really cool though.
Rest in Peace

Looks like a die clash and a vertically misaligned die. Notice how both the stike and the clash are weak on one side.

Is the planchet the same thickness all way around? The area in question might be thinner?

I didn't notice part of the coin being thinner, but I will get out my calipers when I get home.

It might be slightly thinner on that edge, but not a lot. I've seen other coins that are more lopsided. I couldn't measure a significant difference within my ability to get consistent measurements with my calipers.

If it were a Cud that area on the rim would be thicker. I'm thinking a struck through on both sides on your coin. There is a clash on the reverse on the die. I would hang onto this coin.

Oh yeah, it's definitely in my keeper pile. It's the best looking clash I've found; it's so clearly Jefferson's profile on the reverse, and it looks very cool in-hand. It's the kind of error that doesn't require tons of explanation for somebody who doesn't know coins to see what's wrong with it.
