This little darlin' looks like someone took a steel wool pad to her some years back, and the effects are still noticable today.
Thought there might be a very few here that might have never seen the ill effects of improperly cleaning a coin, so I decided I'd share this one with them. If a coin really needs cleaning for preservation, or for whatever reason you deem necessary, trust it to someone who know what they're doing, and avoid mishaps such as this one.

Ralph

yeah I have seen many morgans (maybe because thats all I collected for awhile) like that, it seems back in the day the "thing" was to get as many lines on the coin as possible so no one else would want it (I am starting to sound like my Grandfather now He would always say everytime he saw a coin that had been deliberately scratched that they did that just so no one like him would want to keep it, of course he would keep it anyway) I am sure its not as sinister as this but I dont really know what could be going through some peoiples minds when I look at some coins, it is probably something simple like it was given to a kid and they did GOD knows what ever to it and you are now seeing the end result

Hey Ralph, did you think it could be something as simple as the person who owned this coin carried it around in their pocket for many years. Of course his pants were made of canvas and had no linings in the pockets.

Something even more startling is that these are the type of coin that some of us made rings from to give to our girl friends. They always liked the silver rings that you could still see the date on.

Yep, us collectors like "shiny" coins. And a real good scrub with a steel wool pad will make that coin shine like the day it was made.
NOT.

Hey just carrying that coin on Old Dan's stage coach out west would have taken its toll and that was after all that bouncing around on the Pony Express to get it out to the banks. Years later it was carried as a good luck piece through WW I and then through WWII and all the skirmishes since! So actually it is a fine looking piece that may have been doctored up a bit to make it presentable but the history is there! If only the coin could talk so its real beauty could be known!!!
