When a bank gets coins, they come in boxes of rolls (or sometimes bags of rolls). Most of the time a box is 50 rolls, which is $25 in pennies, $100 in nickels, $250 in dimes, $500 in quarters or halves. If that's too much for you to go through at once, just get 10 rolls or whatever amount you feel comfortable with. Some people get lots of boxes at once if their bank is willing to order them. Some people like to specifically ask for customer wrapped rolls because they think they're better.

They might not have that many, or might not want to give you that many because it would leave them with not enough coinage for their business customers. You can ask them to order extra for you, particularly if you have a weekly amount you like to go through (I have a bank that gets me two boxes each of dimes and nickels each week, and a different one that gets me a box of halves on a more irregular schedule).

Make sure you take the coins back to a DIFFERENT bank (not just a different branch) so you don't get the same coins back over and over.

One bank prefers that I not pick up coins on Saturday because they have less staff and it takes two tellers to go into the vault for boxes of coins, which can create a backup in the drive-thru. Also, they usually get the coins on the same day each week, so cleaning them out at the end of the week is bad because a lot of businesses get coins on Monday and the Brinks truck arrives on Tuesday or Wednesday. This is another reason to ask them to order extra coins for you.

Keep in mind, coins are heavy. $500 in halves, quarters or dimes weighs about 25 pounds. Be polite and friendly to tellers. If they like you they might hook you up with interesting stuff they find. Reward the helpful ones with chocolate and referrals.

First I ask if I can buy rolls then I ask if they have extra quantity up to a box since I don't usually order boxes ahead of time. I like boxes because I get more coins than just a handful of rolls plus tellers don't have to count each roll in a sealed box. It is more coins to dump though.

Step #1 Develop a good relationship with several tellers at several different banks.

Step #2 Open an account at a bank/branch that will be your dump and remember never to ask for rolls from that branch under any circumstances.

Step #3 Start asking If they can spare a few rolls of what ever denomination and explain that you are a collector. If they ask "Are you looking for silver?" say "No, but if I happen to find any I keep it".

Step #4 Ask to have a box of what ever you want to search ordered for you and make sure you have the cash to cover it. Pick it up the day you say you will and bring along a bag of Hershey's Kisses for the tellers. Reese Cup Minis are welcomed also. I am not joking about about the candy either, I an dead serious, You earn tons of bonus points with these ladies. Consider it an offering to the coin Gods.

Step #5 Refer to Step #2

I put X's on my rolls so I know if I get them back that I searched them...i haven't gotten any back yet. I have a few friends that work at some local banks. One actually pulls out silver for me and gives them to me (she gave me a 68 and a 70 Half Dollar this week. I haven't gotten a "bag" yet but I am going to have a nice check this week so I might get a bag. Just be friendly...I have never had a teller be negative or mean to me. Some have asked me why I am trading rolls for rolls. I just tell them its a hobby I have started with my nephews...
